    Londonderry - on Mars! Seriously!

    I kid you not.

The latest update from the Mars Exploration Rovers is - funny - although I can see it provoking some people into a right state.

    To quote:

During the past week, Spirit acquired microscopic images of a soil target called "Londonderry," which is an active wind drift shaped by the motion of bouncing sand grains. Spirit also acquired super-resolution panoramic camera images of an exposure of layered bedrock with rounded rock fragments known as "Zucchelli." Scientists hope the images will reveal information about color, structure, grain size, and mineralogical composition of the rock.
Someone must have been watching the news about the latest developments in the court case about renaming the city...

    London(sic)Derry on Mars!

Were there little green men with orange sashes and bowler hats walking along the walls and declaring their inalienable right to walk the Queen's highway?

Derry and Londonderry are also neighbouring towns in New Hampshire.

My brother lives fairly near by, and apparently there is a road sign for Derry and North Londonderry that is shortened to "Derry No. Londonderry".
