My next question is why the security on the Stormont door was unarmed. In Northern Ireland, of all places; even the entrance to the British Parliament is manned by men with machine guns!

UDA hit squads 'sought Stone' on Friday

The Ulster Defence Association dispatched four hit squads to hunt down convicted killer Michael Stone as he made his way to Stormont, according to reports in a British newspaper.

Senior UDA sources told the Observer newspapaper that the units were told to either 'arrest or shoot' Mr Stone because they feared he was planning to destabilise Northern Ireland's peace process.

the reason is because Sinn Fein advised the British governemnt in 1998 not to have a permanent police presence guarding Stormont . It would make their job of selling Stormont to nationalists much more difficult if it was being guarded by the RUC/PSNI on a permanent basis . Despite there being a permanent RUC presence guarding the building up to 1997 after the puppet assembly re-opened it was withdrawn with only sporadic patrols through the Stormont estate .

Perhaps if the UDA were so intent on stopping Mr Stone attacking stormont with a toy gun they should have went to Stormont and waited for him .
