    Waterford WP selection convention

Last night the WP held their Waterford constituency selection convention at the Granville Hotel in Waterford City. About 300 WP members and supporters packed into the main function room. The speakers included Cllrs John Halligan & Davy Walsh and Tomas MacGiolla.

At the convention, Cllr John Halligan of Waterford was officially unveiled as the WP candidate to contest the next Dail general election for the constituency of Waterford. Cllr Halligan gave the main speech. Overall a hugely sucessfull night and the turnout was much higher than expected.

His transfers might well be important though.

his transfers will be essential to either cullinane or o shea, and maybe both. prob cullinane more so, though, as not sure where else his transfers will come from...here's hoping that all of the votes do transfer. would be nice to have 2 left TDs in waterford.

    Don't discount him too easily

Any candidate from a small party who can get 300 people to a rally on a Friday night at the start of a bank holiday weekend shouldn't be discounted. From what I've heard they were nearly all local too and not just bussed in for the occasion.

Like to offer my best wishes to John Halligan and all the members of the Workers Party in Waterford.

As you'll understand, I hope that Davy Cullinane is elected first, but after that best wishes to John.

Standing for any election is hard work, and anyone that does show should be congratulated.

Was there an extra 0 on the attendance figure? If not, I'm assuming they brought in people from all over Ireland? Still tough, good luck to Halligan.

Not so. Apparently the local independent radio station WLR were there along with local press photographers. There were a few Cork people there (half a dozen at most) plus a handful from elsewhere (less than 5% of the audience from outside Waterford). Staff had to bring in extra chairs to the ballroom.

    Non-workers of the world unite!

The party that once dreamed of the brotherhood of man on earth has essentially been reduced to the old Waterford People's Party groupuscle.
