    Oh, my apologies.

I thought it went un-noticed, I am a fan of the guy as you may gather, but theres no room for this stupidity.

Not having the cop-on to remove yourself is indeed a boo-boo, albeit a minor one. Like surely, he'd know that the people who don't like him would be on to it in a flash??

Apart from the democratic deficit it shows, where it could be spun that something underhand was occuring, whereas it mightn't be the reality, that side of the story could be percieved by the public.

    Very silly mistake, really.

Planning and corruption go hand in hand in this nation..look at the Galway Fiasco, where envelopes(Not containing money, more subtle than that!) were placed on cllrs desks during a 5 minute recess, when it came to planning matters involving a members direct Interest...

Chalk this one up to inexperience

Hey man....I have nothing personal against him and am not a spring hater......but I would not call this a minor BooBoo...This is major, in that a director of a company trying to develop land sat in the council chamber as a councillor while the same said land was the object of a debate is inexcusable and is a major BooBoo.......not of course taking into account the fact that he tried to speak on the matter.........I am sure the ethics committee will be having a look at this..........

And again to reiterate I am not a Spring Hater....

Ya, even when i re-read this myself, it sound like i was excusing it, I will clarify...

I thought that this planning issue(golf club) was being discussed by Cllrs, and that AJ didn't speak on it nor remove himself. As in an idle chat between cllrs at the meeting, which often happens...Did the local media pick it up? and did they say it to him afterwards?

I am still of the opinion that Cllrs should only legally have to remove themselves from a meeting if there is a decision to be made, i.e an Agenda Item where they have a direct conflict of interest, where a vote is needed.

The fact that AJ spoke, or tried to, is very naive on his part. Removing himself would have at least shown some political acumen...it is simple. He, as a public rep, is expected to show leadership.

I still think its relatively minor, as he did not try and influence any planning decision...to my knowledge, of course...not having been there. An ethics Ctte would at most issue a reprimand, because under Local Govt Act, the issue of planning lies with the planners...

apologies about suggesting you hate the Springs, it was a gentle jibe, but there are some here who do...as evidenced in another thread where people were saying

    A) he wouldn't get elected and B) he would poll very lowly if he did!!

Wouldn't it be SIPO that someone would have to make a complaint to?
Or the Town Manager in the first place?

Not that i think its worthy of a complaint, but I do think Cllrs should uphold ethics

I think it was a debate and more than Idle chat.....The media did pick up on it and I am sure that if any one cops that he is a director of the said company he will be asked for a statement on the matter by them

You taking my bet up rosmuc? First 4/5 people to PM me, ill bet them a tenner each!!

If you have such an issue why not write into the paper yourself...theres lots of ways you can approach it, I don't think the media are going to wait for te imprimatur of Dick Spring, seriously, you need to grow up if you think it works that way.

A host of local media outlets promoted AJ for the last year or so without shame, so you seriously think that uncle Dick does not use his power as a director of major companies to influence heads in high places. You must not be very well informed on how the real world works.

AJ is well capable of promoting himself.

Successful businessmen have a tendancy to be good at that, and ya know what, so what if Dick promoted him, sure he is a great uncle to be having. If Ireland thrives on nepotism, its this kind of nepotism id like to see, not the Aherns or the Lenihans or the Cowens...at least AJ has a spine and a brain

Maybe promoting mango squash in his juice bar. I also think the Spring bandwagon will trip up with their links to big business which far removes them from Labour's socialist ideology. Could you not but help yourself from laughing if you had to witness the Spring's sing the Labour anthem "wrap the red flag around me" at a Labour conference. Clearly AJ cannot stand up for himself and cannot make any decision without a prompt from uncle Dick. We will agree to differ on this and I think a GE campaign will expose him as a very weak candidate in time, presuming that NK Labour doesn’t turn on him first and not nominate him.
