Dick Spring to run in North Kerry?

I have heard from a number of sources that Dick Spring is considering running again in North Kerry at the next election. This would obviously be a surprise not least to Cllr. Terry O'Brien who has been trying to profile himself in recent weeks. Do people think that it would be wise of Spring to run again considering the embarressment of 2002?

I wasn't embarrased by the Spring defeat.

In fact his speech at the count centre was one of the most memorable events in the last General Election.

It was an embarassment to lose out to a bearded ex-con, but his performance (in electoral terms) was not an embarassment.

He came second in terms of first preferences, in a bad election for both hm and Labour generally. Losing out on transfers was just the luck of the draw

Again, not a word you should be using.

"Disappointment" might be a better way of putting it

Considering how close Dick came to losing out on a couple of occasions prior to 2002, I am aure it was disappointing rather than disastorous.

If FF were to lose their seat in 2007 that would constitute a disaster and maybe Spring has sensed an opening there.

I think he will almost certainly win the seat back if he did run. He could credibly sell himself as the only TD who would possibly be in the next cabinet in he were elected. Whether he is likely to be considering getting back into politics I am not so sure. BUT HE WOULD DEFINITELY WIN A SEAT.

A word I shouldn't be using. Why not?

Do you not think that it was a disaster for Dick Spring personally and for the Lab party in general that their former leader and Tanaiste lost his seat to a shinner?

Dissappointment would be a complete understatement.

Anyway, , back to the point of the thread. Will he run or not?

    Hmmm. Interesting.

I certainly wouldn't consider 2002 an embarrassment or a disaster.

I think short term it could be a wise move, but long term it simply continues to delay the development of new blood in the Labour party, something we desperately need.

It should ensure the mother of all battles in Kerry North next time out. Who's seat would/could he take? Assuming Ferris does well, and FG get a bounce, is there a chance that FF could lose out??

Has there (since 1932) been any constituencies without a FF TD? Could GE 2007 be a first in this regard.

Getting excited just thinking about it.

Really, he tried to sell that the last time and it didn't do him any good. Also the fact that he has been out of political life since well before 2002 would probably go against him.
