Horses: the greatest criminals of Moyross?

    http://www.live95fm.ie/newsroom/indepth ... n&id=88563

Gardai and employees from Animal Control Services came under attack as they impounded 8 horses which were allegedly being kept illegally in Delmege Park, Moyross.

Three people were arrested and brought to Mayorstone Garda Station.
The Limerick leader, in an article I could not find online, has more detail; the response to the roundup was throwing stones and rioting.

So... let's make this clear. The drug dealers roam free. The murderers are uncaught. The notorious "feuding" families have peace in their homes. But the greatest criminals, who had to be tackled NOW and never mind the resulting violence, were horses! And then some desperate owners who reacted in an understandable way.

I have never been to Moyross (call me a coward if you want, but then I had no business there either). But I know what horselovers, and especially young horselovers, are like. I knew some back in Russia, a couple were my close friends. And if their horses were taken like that, I guess even the most peaceloving ones could be provoked into rioting.

Until today I had a "get tough" opinion on the dreaded estates; I thought that constant armed Garda patrols couldd work best. But I am not so sure what the Garda is aiming at now. Destroying pretty much the only alternative to gang life for the teenagers there - is that law and order?

If any *peaceful and legal* protests are planned I'd like to be invited, please. I'd also be interested to understand other perspectives.

    Hmm.

I confess the text above was deliberately provocative; I wrote what I feel, not what I think.

But even with provocation, no reply. P.ie, the big nest of network flamers on everything, is quiet on this.

If this issue is impolite to discuss, please tell me so I can delete the post.

    Roaming horses are illegal.
    Gardai impounded them.

    I see no problem here.
    Unless they used a whip.

The question I have is why the Garda has the resources for this - but not for tackling the more significant crime in the same places.

How do you know they aren't tackling serious crime?
I dont think these cops were pulled out of murder rooms to run after horses.

Can't really comment on the rights and wrongs of removing the horses as I don't know the circumstances but if the horses ought to have been removed to comply with the law then I have no problem with it.

The only problem is that it might antagonise the local community and make life harder for the Gardai in Moyross in general.

Hopefully there is provision in the regeneration programme so horses can be kept safely and legally

I thought it was a worthwhile post .I think a lot of young people in council estates are into the horses and it seems like a wasted opportunity to not encourage it .
But nothing will be done to nurture this and turn it into something that benefits the community .
    No votes in it .

I have stayed in Moyross (and indeed Delmege Park which you mentioned in the article) on many occasions. Indeed there are plenty of horses coming and going, but I see no problem with that. And I have never felt the slightest bit threatened by Moyross.

Perhaps the horses were impounded for their own well being........? And as for the suggestion on encouraging the practice of using horses for the general good of the area, its a great idea and would fully back it, however horses are extremely expensive to keep......? Who would pay for the up-keep?
