Wilkinson drives bid for new 40,000-seater GAA stadium in Waterford
Former county hurler wants 'proud new home' for GAA in Waterford
Press Release by Ollie Wilkinson at 15:00 Today
The building of a new 40,000-seater GAA stadium in Waterford capable of hosting Munster Championship hurling and football matches will be a central political ambition for Waterford Fianna Fáil TD Ollie Wilkinson if re-elected to the Dáil.
Deputy Wilkinson made the pitch after Waterford's hurling win against Kilkenny last weekend Sunday, ending a 44-year wait for a National League title.
- As someone who's been involved in the GAA all my life, I was immensely proud of the Waterford team last weekend as they triumphed over Kilkenny and ended the long wait for a league win.
- Over the past number of months, I've been in close contact with my Fianna Fáil colleague, Sports Minister John O'Donoghue, about the possibility of building a new GAA stadium in Waterford.
- It's unfortunate that a game as significant as the Waterford-Kilkenny National League final had to be played in Semple Stadium because we haven't got the capacity here.
- My vision is to build a new 40,000-seater GAA stadium in Waterford which would be co-funded by the Government and the GAA.
