An Election Promise to beat All Election Promises

Wilkinson drives bid for new 40,000-seater GAA stadium in Waterford

Former county hurler wants 'proud new home' for GAA in Waterford

Press Release by Ollie Wilkinson at 15:00 Today

The building of a new 40,000-seater GAA stadium in Waterford capable of hosting Munster Championship hurling and football matches will be a central political ambition for Waterford Fianna Fáil TD Ollie Wilkinson if re-elected to the Dáil.

Deputy Wilkinson made the pitch after Waterford's hurling win against Kilkenny last weekend Sunday, ending a 44-year wait for a National League title.

    - As someone who's been involved in the GAA all my life, I was immensely proud of the Waterford team last weekend as they triumphed over Kilkenny and ended the long wait for a league win.

    - Over the past number of months, I've been in close contact with my Fianna Fáil colleague, Sports Minister John O'Donoghue, about the possibility of building a new GAA stadium in Waterford.

    - It's unfortunate that a game as significant as the Waterford-Kilkenny National League final had to be played in Semple Stadium because we haven't got the capacity here.

    - My vision is to build a new 40,000-seater GAA stadium in Waterford which would be co-funded by the Government and the GAA.

Delighted to see the decies take their place in the sun but is a 40,000 capacity stadium reallt viable in Waterford? Given that Munster has 4 other stadia with this capacity and the comapratively recent revamp at Walsh Park, Wexford Park and Nowlan Park where are all the matches that will fill the stadium going to come from?
Did atendences at GAA in the 2006 champinoship not fall? Are there not too many matches as it is? I thought Clare were also going to do a ground swop with a developer and get a 40,000 capacity stadium also. Surelay all these cannot be viable?
don't tell me that the FAI will be looking to play here too!

Maybe they could fund it by putting a private hospital on the grounds too?

because a sitting TD is promising the electorate a 40,000 all-seater stadium, in the hope that they are as thick as himself, and just might swallow it!

Mind you, it might be nicer to have a new stadium for the Kilkenny supporters to visit when ther is a local derby!!

Maybe he could put it near the new bridge and Cullen could cancel the tolls each time theres a match.

    hmpf...

Why not build it in Kilkenny, thats what I want to know?

Amazing what people will say to try and grab a few extra votes

Next thing you know it'll be an F1 track in Kildare North at Mondello.
