2FM lose market share especially Ryan

Delighted to hear that Gerry Ryan continues to lose market share and listeners. This odious man with his tabloid show refused to take a pay cut from his monstrous salary earlier on in the year. Maybe there is a connection.

Always hated 2 FM. Catered for an airhead audience. Why the license payer needed to fund this dross I will never know. There should be one Radio and one TV station in public ownership not the stable of mediocrity that we have.

In fairness, he did take the pay cut in the end. I agree in full though. It's a poor effort from the huge amount of money extorted is from us.

Agree totally. I would question what public service remit 2fm is catering for. There is no difference between it and any other commercial station. The same goes for RTE2.

Indeed, both channels should be privatised.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

Can't agree there. Any sports coverage aired by RTE is done on RTE2, this is a public service and likewise any educational children's television (on the Den etc) is aired on RTE2. These are both useful public service broadcasts.

Anyone know if the radio listnership figures include podcasts?

Having looked at the top ten listened to radio shows for the past year in the Irish Times this morning.
Both Playback and Dunphy I only ever listen to the podcast as I'm usually off at a match on a Saturday morning.

How is broadcasting sport a public service? If RTE didn't exists someone else would cater for that market. If public service broadcasting has any meaning it must be to make and show things that would not be shown in a commercial environment.

By operating 2fm RTE are sucking up revenues that should be sustaining independent stations.

Of course broadcasting sport is a public service - it is something which the general public is incredibly interested in and which the State and Nation are represented in internationally. If the broadcasting of sport is not a public service why do we have designated list administered by the Government requiring certain sporting events to be broadcast on free-to-air terrestrial television - the olympics and world cup are examples and recently the Heineken Cup Final was added.

The public are interested in lots of things. The market will supply them because of that. The Heineken Cup didn't even exist until recently and it is a commercial venture. The government have stolen the final on our behalf. That is not a public service.

It has no more moral justification that the government deciding that because people like U2 they should give away their new album for nothing.

Actually, 2fm is far inferior in terms of its music output compared to Today FM. The commerical station's entire evening schedule is given over to alternative(ish) music, whereas our national brodcaster broadcasts wall-to-wall pap, with a half-arsed nod to indie types after 12am.

Anyway, it seems that there is going to be another re-branding of 2fm, which is going to go after the BBC Radio 2 market. There's a good discussion here

On The Record Prediction: 2fm will be in an even bigger mess in five years time
