Tonight with Vincent Browne Thurs 4th June

Last nights economics debate was excellent and enlightenong, I agree that this recession started with Maggie Thatcher and Reagan who promoted deregulation and greed, and look where we ended up. What are other peoples opinions. The panel to me certainly new their subject and our present politicians would do well to take note. But has the present government's guarantee to Anglo I B no simply pulled the rug from under our feet, they did not go in with caution and the Bankers and Property developers are now being effectively bailed out. Has not this guarantee to be honoured regardless?

The debate was excellent. I doubt most politicians understood what was being said so doubt they would take note. Imagine Coughlan or O'Dea trying to join in with that debate..

Including Anglo in the Guarantee is the biggest mistake that could have been made. But our politicians were acting in their own interests and not the interests of the nation.

Lenihan and Cowen did us great damage when they gave the Guarantee. There was no discussion with the Cabinet and virtually no advice from economists. It was a desperate, reckless, foolish and ultimately very damaging solo run on Lenihan's part. Lenihan said the Guarantee wouldn't cost us anything but it has already cost us a fortune in additional costs of Government borrowing. Ultimately it could take us to sovereign default.

    That's the quintessential question...
We all love animals. Why do we call some 'pets' and others 'dinner'?

If you would like some pretty weighty evidence for that stance here is an article for the New York Times written by Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman, Professor of Economics and International Affairs at Princeton and Centenary Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics.

You'll note that the title of the article is 'Reagan Did It'. It is a compelling argument.

No good asking Bertie if he knows Krugman. Bertie's time at LSE cannot be verified
