    RTE closing down news service

What happened to the 9pm News from RTE last night?
Usually only a quarter of the bulletin is sport but last night when there was so much going on in the country over paedophile priests and the politicians who bailed them out, RTE devoted the lead item and most of the bulletin to a sports match.
We have become accustomed to having the news hi-jacked by sports, after all it has been re-named RTE News and Sport but this was a disgrace.
Of course, not reporting news is a way of covering up what is really going on. A free press is reputed to be one of the cornerstones of democracy but if that free press turned a blind eye to years of corruption, then we in Ireland cannot claim to have a free press.
Who hid the corruption of the Bertie years? Who never noticed the scandal of the Haughey regime? Who didn't know about the reform schools?
    Hooray for the BBC!

or any this is only a notion that has popped into my head, perhaps some team from Ireland did remarkably well in an international tournament and merited extended coverage. Did any Irish teams win in any interntaional tournament?

RTE Covers British sport ad nauseum and the BBC covers all the worst Irish news it can get it's hands on.

    Hurray for the Off button.

The BBC2 Documentary on Hayden the great composer last night, was excellent.

I don't know about tournaments; I switched to another channel.
But don't get me wrong. I am all for sports being covered on TV for those with that interest but why mix it in with the News? Sports should have its own news.
'RTE News and Sport' makes as much sense as 'RTE Weather and Business' or 'RTE Current Affairs and Cooking'.

Jeez it was ONE night, one night in which we saw ANOTHER IRISH team win the most prestigious club championship in EUROPE in their sport - three out of 14 times has this accolade been bestowed on IRISH teams - it is something we are actually punching ABOVE our weight in and we should be CELEBRATING it. Don't worry, NORMAL SERVICE WILL RESUME SHORTLY with the continued reporting of the church and their sordid history, as well as the other problems we are wallowing in.

On other NEWS - its lovely outside today isn't it?

A bit of perspective here would be a good thing.

have to say I know a number of people who read there papers back to front to start off with the sport. I don't think your problem is with RTE's declining standard of news coverage but rather that they are covering things you (if there was any way of underlining you there I would) have no interest in.

Those of us wearied to distraction by seemingly endless sport debates would welcome a Sports Only channel on RTE.

Meanwhile the French newscast on TG4 9.15AM weekdays is worth viewing. If you can spare the time from discussing M UNITED.
