Seattle Post-Intelligencer goes web only- should/will Irish papers do the same ?

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is a quality US newspaper, it's circulation of 127,584 is very similar to the Irish Times of 118,259

It had been struggling and is now going online only, and is the largest newspaper to date to take this plunge:

    New York Times
The Post-Intelligencer is the largest American paper to drop its print edition and become an Internet-only entity.

But the P-I, as it is called, will resemble a local Huffington Post more than a traditional newspaper, with a news staff of about 20 people rather than the 165 it has had, and a site consisting mostly of commentary, advice and links to other news sites, along with some original reporting....
The NYT also has a reasonable opinion piece in which it points out this is a growing trend.

The Irish Times, & Independent News & Media are both in trouble - will we see a death here ?

Personally I'd welcome a quality Irish news site that had a small staff, some decent op-ed pieces & lots of links to world media/websites.

Well, I was told at the weekend that print media is ********************ed by one of the country's leading business men. Really we ought to be expanding more into internet journalism as it's much more convenient but still keep the option of papers in areas where they sell more copies then average.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

I saw that today on RSS Feed ..... seems like a logical thing to do to cut/save costs ....

This will only work tho in areas of high internet usage .... a lot of people in this country still don't have decent internet access and a lot can't even turn on a computer ....

I'd say technologically people aren't with it enough in a general sense nationwide to have this idea come in anytime soon ... course that prob won't stop various media outlets folding or having to merge or downgrading to survive in the meantime

NYT makes good use of witter and Guardian has opened out an open platform with Gnu, Python and Ruby thats cos they are unafraid to explore and exploit media tools. Twitter: What are you doing?
