In the six months between May and October of 1847, Toronto, a city of 20,000 souls, was deluged with a human tide of suffering - 38,000 sick, weak and desperate famine refugees from Ireland.
Absorbing and treating these suffering souls was a challenge of epic proportions. How could a community as small as Toronto cope with the housing, feeding and health care needs of this human tsunami arriving almost daily into the harbour of Toronto?
As many as 3,000 of the refugees perished from typhus and cholera and a whole range of other afflictions caused by malnutrition and the arduous journey from Ireland. The dead were buried in one of two mass graves, long since forgotten, located underneath the city's downtown core.
Who were the men, women and children who landed in Toronto? What were their stories? Who perished and who did not? And whatever became of the people who survived and thrived despite this unimaginable beginning to their new lives in North America?
