Manseragh does not know the maths behind the pension levy

On Newstalk, Manseragh, the junior minister for finance could not explain the maths behind the pension levy. He had no clue of the exact details and then said that the policy is correct but he has not been briefed on the details.

Why are we paying this man?

To be fair to him the good citizens of Irisheconomy.ie (top site BTW) are also unsure as to whether the maths of the levy adds up to what the govt. claims.

Surely the question is why is he one of the few people willing to come and defend the Government? He's been everywhere, and despite his performance (defending the indefensible?) he has shown consistently a willingness to go public and at least put (or BE) a public face on what the Government is up to.

You won't get that from Cowen or Lenihan.

I think Hook was more shocked that Mansergh claimed that he had not been briefed on this and he is a Junior Minister at the DoF FFS! Hook's reaction was classic, his dumbfoundedness was palatable as he just said...."uh, ok, well thanks for joining us on the show".....followed by a call to break a Guinness record in text message compilation to be dumped on the Leinster House!

We have the most economically ignorant politicians in the Western World.Halfarsed teachers, mickeymouse parish pump business people that own a bit of carpark ,pub, pharmacy blah blah, looking to get a bit of planning.
A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

Only 1 government minister has experience of running a business.

I actually find mansergh quite refreshing. May come across as a bumbling professor but has a good brain and is less into spewing out politician speak than many of his colleagues

    Oh for god sake.

    1) He's not a member of the Cabinet - he has no constitutional obligation to know what's going on, the 15 member of cabinet do.

    2) He's a junior minister at finance with responsibility for the OPW. He's basically head curator of pretty things for the State. Get over it lads.

Bit of cop on needed here, he's a junior minister with a few staff, that's it.
