    Anyone listen to Marian??

Listened to the Marian Finucane show this am(as usual if not working)
She carried interviews with various categories of the new unemployed!
Have experience of this of late.
Was approached by another mam after a transition year meeting in the school.(I'm on the board of management and both kids were in primary school together) She wanted advice about the extra money for transition year!!Hubby hasn't worked for a few months and she simply does not have the money for the year!

Sorted it out for her (I hope) but if work doesn't turn up for hubby I may look like a sap!

Later that week I was at a meeting in a health project in a "disadvantaged" area in my locality with another "voluntary" hat on. The community developement worker told me that a lot of her clients didn't fear the recession as they had been "walking the walk" forever!
they had never spent what they didn't have so it was not going to be anything new to them.

Tis one hell of a sorry state we have arrived in!!!

I can't listen to that woman, her voice grates on me, it starts with a yelp, then goes down to a hoarse and manly voice, before ending on a long yelp again. Mary Wilson seems to have copied it to perfection, which is why I don't listen to her show either. She, Finucane, has a very Establishment approach to contentious issues, like Ahern's Tribunal stuff, never had anyone on who called a spade a spade on Ahern, and adopts a hand-wringing 'why-oh-why?' approach to everything else.

As to the general point, things are rough alright. Here in Cork the dole queues are now stretching out on to the main road and round the corner. I saw TV3 News (I think) filming a dole queue in Dublin the other day, I thought that it was wrong and insensitive, many people there would feel some shame and not want the fact publicised. Many turned their backs to hide, but some were caught unawares before doing so. Sign of the times...

It's not a bad way to be. But sadly it won't protect anybody from the teeth of the recession when the choice is no longer not spending what you haven't got but having nothing to spend at all!

Should I just cave to the teenagers and listen to "spin".(well I do sometimes, but it IS an accident)

BBC Radio Four, on 198 Long Wave if I'm in the car, usually. On a Saturday morning/noon I used to listen to I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue religiously, it being the funniest program in the world, until the Humph died. I listen to the foreign stuff, Any Questions, and the News Quiz then too. I'm from Britain originally, though, so it might interest me more than most...

I think Finucane earns something like €400,000 per annum for her arduous weekends?

Her voice is very annoying alright tho'. What's even more annoying is the fact she's seen as a respected journalist. She interviewed someone sympathetically suffering from cancer ye se. Although she consistently shirks from discussing health policy in a factual and realistic way. You won't find any Susie Longs on here...

Marian is most comfortable safely chatting within the accepted parameters of power and hegemony.
You can almost feel her shift uncomfortably in her seat (along with making various huffings and a puffings) when a guest goes outside the establishment spectrum.
Thankfully such guests are hardly ever asked to appear on the show.

I think everyone thought Finucane was putting on the "doesn't-av-a-clue" impression for the liveline gig, but now she's doing the same for the flagship weekend shows.

In a Doctor Who style RTE radio 1 scenario, she would replicate a formidable panel/army full of "Friends Firsts' Jim Powers" to entertain her of a weekend. The Jim_Powers (TM) could be programmed to organ-monkey dance for their corporate masters and Marian could conjugate and ruminate and introduce advertisements.
