Sinnott On IT Front Page : why?

Can someone please tell me with the crisis in Gaza, the situation with the Gas pipelines, the deepening economic problems here and countless other newsworthy issues both national and global why the IT ran with a front page story abouth Kathy Sinnott forwarding a chain mail about a novena??

    Why?

Because Cathy is religious and opposed to Euro-federalism while the Irish Times is secular and pro Euro-Federalism.

I saw that and had intended to post about it but, as you rightly point out, the issue is so trivial as to be pointless.

She is an anti-abortionist. Avowedly so and her supporters are in no doubt about this. Why is the simple fact that she circulated an email about the Freedom of Choice Act in the US merit a front page in the IT. If they are arguing that as an MEP she should be keeping out of US politics then they should have said as much.

    And here is the punchline:

The MEP said that since sending the message, she had checked with people in the US about the situation and the "feeling seems to be that the situation will be defused by President Obama".
This shows how stupid and dellusional Kathy Sinnot is. Obama is actually to the left of he pro-choice movement in the US, and holds more extreme pro-abortion views than any Democrats on Capitol Hill.

For someone who claims to be so down to earth, and a voice of the people, poor old Kathy doesn't half hang around with some poncey upper-class types. A British Lord, and a load of anti-Irish right-wing UKIP toffs….

And then there was her rather embarassing expenses scam, which was exposed by the Irish Independent (via a French documentary)

Kathy Sinnott has every right to ask people to pray against abortion. The issue is that the email (as paraphrased in the IT article) seems to make rather bizarre claims such as:

"The letter maintains that if the US legislation is passed, Catholic bishops will close down all Catholic hospitals, which it says amount to more than 30 per cent of hospitals in the United States.

It further claims that the legislation being approved "could result in a future amendment that would force women by law to have abortions in certain situations rape, Down syndrome babies, etc and could even regulate how many children women are allowed to have"."
Given the near impossibilty of introducing radical legislation in the US Congress without a consistant super majority, I strongly suspect that these claims are highly exagerated as the pro life crowd are want to do.
Ms Sinnott was elected as a disability campaigner. This is very noble cause and people with disabilities need all the assistance they can get but it seems her true identity is a fundamentalist catholic. She also was very vocal in the anti Lisbon campaign where she seemed to base her objections on similar threats to family issues. Despite much of the foundations of the EU being influenced by Roman Catholic/ Christian Democratic social teaching she seems to see demonic threats everywhere.
In a democracy people have the right to know if there public representatives are far more extreme than they presented themselves, hence the IT story.
