Carey clearly implies that it required membership of the EU to move the social agenda forward. That is the whole point of the article: what is the point that she is making if not that one? She childishly accuses women who voted 'no' of being treacherous on the basis that is was the EU that brought them various benefits. The fact is that all those benefits where in the mixer and would have occured under local influence and impetus. The changes also required the agreement of the Irish people and if as is being suggested that Irish society was hostile to such changes, then they would not have materialised. (Or are you saying that Brussels is a dictatorship?)We still have derogation on other social issues. You can play with words all you wish, but as previously stated, if you are a supporter of Lisbon, you and Carey are doing that cause more damage than Ganley ever could simply by being disengenuous. If you have to resort to 'smoke and daggers' then is is easy to conclude that a campaign of distraction is on the go. And of course that begs the question; Why?
