Will RTÉ make a mess of another momentous news story?

After being thoroughly outclassed by the Protestants at the BBC when Pope John Paul died and and making the decision to base their coverage of the Iraq war from Bahrain(or Qatar?), it looks RTÉ are going to do it again. The broadcaster paid for by you and I appears like it will totally misportray the US presidential election finale.

They have already made a mess of it so far. No live coverage of the debates, nothing on the conventions, nothing on Super Tuesday, crass coverage coverage of the candidates dripping in sentimentality and little in the way of prioritising the event. Instead we are limited to 10 minutes of so every other Thursday are a 30 second mention 20 minutes in to 6.1 on slow news days.

I would not be surprised if the only mention of the result was a mention by Cathy Halloran in passing about how the election of some guy in America will mean fewer troops going through Shannon in future.

Someone needs to get the News dept's head out of their collective asses.

    Rant over.

Why should they add to the endless bombardment form a country thousands of miles away? Do the Indian, Brazilian, Japanese elections not also affect millions of people? We need a lot less American news, not more. How many people could name the new Japanese Prime Minister? And how many could name Barack Obama's children?

Because Irish people are a lot closer to America (Both historically and through trade) then they are to India, Brazil or Japan - so its reasonable to assume that the American elections would be of interest to the viewing public.
