Politics and the influence of the media?

I think the influence which the media has is on the wane. A recent example of this is Lisbon being defeated despite broad support from the media. Is this evidence that the mass media does not have as much power as it once possessed?

    No.
The Irish public are like sheep. They run in whatever direction they're prodded in.

Even the Med Card revolution is media driven.

i think the media have been codding themselves for years as to their influence. ditto for advertising.

people arent that stupid and do what they want irrespective of what the "good and the great" think.

lisbon is indeed a wake up call for them but the same could be said of whats happend in the housing market and the stock market. weve had months of **************************************** telling us there was nothing to be worried about but the dogs in the street knew it was bollocked up.

TBH its fun to see how bruised these egos can get.

Haha... I had to do an exam question on this very subject last week, so I could write a big long, referenceds, exampled answer... but I won't LOL...

As for whether the media has a greater or lesser influence today than say 25 years ago.. the answer is.. inconclusive

The Sunday Times was against it, and that paper has a very high readership in Ireland, most of them voters.

A demagogue is someone who will preach doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots.

Not just the Med Card or Lisbon, but practically every issue which generates mass-hysteria is driven by the media. Sure you only have to go back 3/4 weeks and Joe Duffy causing a mini run on the banks by telling all the 'auld wans' listening in that their money wasn't guaranteed.

The media still hold an awful lot of influence on your average punter. Thankfully though, more and more Irish people have been properly educated and know how and when to make decisions of their own without the 'help' of some idiotic journalist who has his own agenda to push. Though I do accept that there are still a large number of media-driven fools who inhabit this country, most of whom know nothing about the issues which they feel so 'strongly' about other than what they read in 'de paper'. It can be extremely annoying at times.

dont confuse the media generating a story and the people generating one.

much as i deride it liveline is more like a bulletin board than a media show as its the people that determine the agenda, not RTE. the run on the banks that nearly happend was caused by average people having an outlet they wouldnt ordinarly get as NONE of the other media had opened their mouths about what was going on despite the clear evidence at their disposal.

thats why it got censored the next day and we had to endure two days of government propaganda telling us to buy shares at one point !

most people have alot more cop on than you giving them credit for, remember people were taking their saving out before the liveline show and sticking it in the post office, thats why it became an issue . "proper" education dosnt come into it and it doesnt stop someone being an idiot, case in point- dan "nows a great time to buy houses" mcglouglin
