Joe Duffy's growing distain for his own callers

Seeing as we have thread on 2fm's fossil Ryan it brought to mind another montrose stalwart.
perhaps understandably, Jow is growing tired of his job.

i've caught his show a few times over the past 6 months or so and noticed an increase in his snappiness, a decrease in his patience and the vanishing of his impartiality. Personally i would last 15 mins as host of that show eg the mother who rang in complaining her young fella only got 5 mins face time with Santa in Lapland. never before did i want him to reach down the phone and throttle someone.

But that shouldn't stop me from pointing out his current inadequacies. I caught 10 mins of his show on Thursday and in that time 2 of his callers were subject to his rudeness. One pulled him on it 'You're doing a lot of sighing there Jow but that's....."
The other was too nice to comment and in fairness to Jow he pulled himself as he said goodbye 'i get more rude and she gets more gracious'.
His rudeness with that lady erupted when she said:
"it was like what they said on Vincent Browne last night th.."
Jow interrupting abruptly and totally in contrast to the callers tone -"I didn't see Vincent Browne last night "
    Lady- " ....Ok Joe"
Jow - "I can't be staying up until 2 in the morning"
    Lady- "It's on at 11 Joe "
Jow- "Whatever, 11 is 2 in the morning to me"

As i said he does a tough job dealing with some really painful people and indeed painful issues. he has often done a good job but now seems tired.

i deal with the public on the phone daily and am never rude- as yet. i cant ever see it happening and i get paid a lot less and there are a lot less people who may witness it.
any body else think joe needs a change? even if it is for his own good.
Or should he continue in this vain with even more attitude and impartiality like some late night shock jock? scaring the biddy out of the bejaysuses.
and does any body think those whacky Friday shows he does with some tools from down the pub from time to time are the exact opposite of funny?

i know i can just switch off. i do.

Although stage managed it's the only show of it's type that allows ordinary people on the airwaves to reach a mass audience. Don't diss it.
The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.

Joe Duffy's callers are not the "masses". The "masses" have jobs. Same bunch of cranks rotated periodically

    .
but presumably he has assistants who screen the calls beforehand . The only way a call like that can get on is if hes ok'ed it beforehand in order to deliberately annoy himself and be rude to some stupid oul one for the sake of it. That makes it his fault and not a case of him having to put up with idiots ringing in talking nonsense

just an excuse for some more sighing

earlier this year he was doing a show on that rubbish about protestants being massacred in the war for Independence . A local historian made reference to the fact the Irish governemnt in 1921 said...and then Joe went..sigh..harumph..the caller said whats the problem ? . Duffy answered..governemnt ?? well as much as we had a " government" very sarcastically . The caller went..but we did have a governemnt..we elected one... Duffy answered sarcastically well ..thats a matter of opinion..lets move on . And then basically tried to make the point the entire era was just sectarian nationalism..through the medium of constant sighs and interruptions .
His point was spoiled though when a relative of the informers who were shot rang in and said..well my ancestors backed the wrong side in a war , they got shot . Thats how it goes , lets move on . Which left Duffy sounding very disappointed .

after that he gave some bollix , some plummy voiced outraged free state gobshyte , an affluent migrant from Dublin to kildare, about half an hour talking about how the GAA was psychologically scarring his 10 year old for life by not permitting him to transfer to a more affluent and popular club a few miles down the road and how he was going to take legal action and drag them through the courts. Over the psychological torture his son was experiencing at being told "no" by someone .
Duffy was quite sympathetic . No sighs , no interruptions , terse questioning of local GAA official .

    even ryans not that bad

we are talking here about the presenter. not the format- which i never mentioned. i may have been dissing some of his callers.
the show remains an incredibly powerful tool. often of last resort in this poorly run country of ours.

i know its stage managed. i've refused to go on air myself a few times.

I heard this and i think your exagerrating a little or either that you're overly sensitive. As someone already said alot of people who ring in are cranks. Every village in Ireland has a few of them and we all know them. Also, the Lady shouldn't be on the radio in the first place if she can't handle some brisque questioning. It's Joe style and approach that gives the programme it's entertainment value and this is borne out in the ratings. If 'm looking for blandlessness and politeness i'll tune in and watch Alan Shearer and co engage in brain dead analysis on Match of the Day.
