    Translations and P.ie

This question has come up on a few lists and I am curious to know how P.ie would deal with a
    Translation Situation:

If someone posts to the site in Spanish/French/Italian and what they are attempting to communicate
may be of interest to P.ie readers, would posters/moderators/volunteers provide on the spot
    accurate translation?

One of the lists I am a member of (Arts- it's a global one) would have multi-disciplined approaches
to projects on everything from science/biotech/dna and some of the artists would be working
in their language, so if someone has that language they would volunteer a brief translation
    for the English speakers.

I know the board system is entirely different to a grouping of working people who operate on
a site and off-list on discussion threads, but at the same time with the expansion of the
EU &c , I do wonder if reports that may be pertinent to irish readers are welcome.

I know that FF have made use of people with translation skills and that another irish
media site removes everything unless it be as gaeilge nó as Bearla , which seems a bit
    limiting.

(can't resist the odd dig, sorry FF)

I shouldn't think so. Allowing other languages that we (most posters and moderators) don't understand causes difficulty as what is postes in Spanish could present legal problems such as libel and not knowing what something means isn't a defense against publishing it, which is what this site does and would be held responsible for.

I s'pos most journos would have English anyhow. but would P.ie consider holding another EU
language until it was translated or just dump it because it was not in English?

I can see the probs but it can also leave a defecit . I mean if FF can go to Ukraine and
have interpreters and local knowledge, then surely if other stuff regarding the movements
of our lovely politician types abroad came up and were interesting- would it not be handy
to have the ability to know what was going on like???

The Russian borders are getting very interesting which is only to be expected with Sarkozy's
    foreign policy.

btw- Charlie Mc Creevy is back conferencing in Croker soon on the Downturn.

The site caters for English and Irish speakers. If people want to translate articles from whatever language and post them they are free to do that.

I was quoted in a czech newspaper a while back, I'd love to kwow what I said!

But I thought Cookie Monster was a big multiculturalist. He's always telling us he is, as well as attacking as "insular" those of us who Say No to Foreign Settlers.

But it turns out Cookie doesn't speak any foreign languages!

What else--he's never lived abroad apart from that boozy week in Lanzarote?

Sounds like the Cook is a fraud!

(For the record, I'd be happy to translate from any of the Romance languages, though I won't translate tripe.)

Where did I say I don't speak any foreign languages? Where did I say that I've never lived abroad? You're making things up.

    Are you denying it now?
So which languages do you claim to speak?
And where outside Ireland have you lived? You only get half points for Britain.

Am I denying that I said somwhere that I didn't speak any foreign languages and that I never lived abroad? Yes I am denying it because I never said either of those things, you made them up.

Why you have to hide amigo?
The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.
