RTE to launch British channel by the end of the year: SBP

RTE are to launch a British digital channel by the end of the year on the freesat service. The channel will have 12-14 hours a day of programming from RTE 1,2 and TG4. It will have virtually no sports coverage as existing broadcasting rights do not include such a channel.

If we clog the British airwaves with Nationwide and Fair City then they'll invade.

If they put and end to Fair City and Nationwide than I'd help out!

How much will this cost? Do RTE intend it to make a profit, or at least be revenue-neutral? I don't particularly like the idea of our licence fee funding TV for foreign audiences. Otherwise, it's probably a good idea - it'll give all the current and soon-to-be emigrants something to remember of the auld sod - though I'm doubtful whether Fair City and Tubridy Tonight repeats will make them want to come home

bet you watch BBC 1 -4 and other UK channels there though, is that not much the same thing ? i know that they are not specifically aimed at the Irish market but are hughly popular here none the less, whilst this channel would in theory be specifically aimed that them, most likely inflicting upon them the best (read worst) of RTE's archieves, the poor bastards are going to be subjected the G Ryan, nothing they may have done to Ireland in the past merits such actions by RTE......

It should work, after all we've been "pirating" British television since at least 1951 and turn about is fair play. My family in London are looking forward to RTÉ International and anyone who wants Gaelic Games in Britain has to subscribe to Setanta via satellite anyway.
Stand for election or get yourself selected as a candidate. Failing that, manage a successful campaign. Then you can come the big man anywhere. Not before.

They tried this a few years ago with Tara Television, they closed it down due to lack of interest as I remember. It's lasting achievement was to broadcast Padraig Flynn on the Late Late Show into Tom Gilmartin's home in England, leading to Ahern's downfall. But i can't see it being any different this time, no-one here gives a toss about 99% of what they produce, so why should people in Britain?
