    Is RTE, basically, Crap?

Specifically I'm talking about Radio 1.

I can't remember when I last listened to a news programme that DIDN'T have some sort of technical hitch. Usually it's an interviewee not being on the line when cued.

Just now, Mary Wilson lost links to the RTE polcol, then to Joan Burton and then Richard Bruton. Luckily the finance ministers line wasn't subject to problems.

This sort of amaturism deosn't appear to happen half as often on other talk stations.

What is it about RTE that makes them so sucessful at consistently failing to get it right?

Listen to RTE radio basically spinning discs all day long. Shoestring radio like Cool Fm.

Yet €160 a year from every listener and non listener alike along with advertising, text messaging and promotions revenue.

What the hell do they do for all that money?
The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.

Hey it is July, don't you know RTE's public service commitment only applies to ten months of the year.

The other one that has me reaching for the off button is this sort of thing:

"We seem to be having trouble with that report...

    [pause]

...We'll... move on the the next story. In India today..." at which point the original report about the Hackballscross sewage plant cuts in.

Well I had not experiences RTE TV or radio for over four years until recently. I have to say of all the TV channels available to me with a satellite I ended up watching RTE more than any other channel. It wasn't patriotism either. The programmes are now of a high standard and mostly interesting. Also TG4 is still making consistently interesting documentaries.
I can't comment on Radio as much. I used to love listening to Morning Ireland in my old job from 12 thousand KMs away and hours in the difference. I also loved Marian Finucane. A great broadacaster. Not into Tubridy at all. Too politically correct for me. Also loved the Mooney Goes Wild Programme.
Over all no RTE is not crap at all and has gotten much better. Seriously who would watch for soccer coverage? RTE or ITV? I don't even like soccer too much but still I could listen the Irish panel all day. A politically incorrect programme at its best.

Conservative estimates within the private media sector reckon it's overstaffed by approximately 250%.
