    Mary Coughlan

Am I the only one who is sick of seeing Mary Coughlan being made the poster girl for the new cabinet? Who still remembers her dirty dozen welfare cuts?

I thought it was Sixteen Savage Cuts!

One, restricting rent allowance entitlement was reversed barely than 6 months later, being found unworkable- but only after tens of thousands had been spent reprinting redesigned application forms, to collect information which was then redundant. She's some woman!

She cut rent allowance by one euro per week for everyone. So during a time when the economy was growing, folks living in rented accommodation (the poorest of the poor usually) had to make a fifty quid a year donation to the state's coffers.

It was done for no good reason other than that she could, because people on rent allowance are not likely to be in a position to kick up about it. Nasty, scary fianna fail hack. On her website she used to have a whole load of quotes about democracy and putting the common good before personal gain etc etc.

I thought at the time she'd go far. Ireland's Thatcher maybe.

she also severely curtailed the back to education allowance for mature students enrolling in full time education, another soft target.

Sick of the sight of her, especially when she speaks unintelligable sentences like this one she offered Gilmore in the Dail two weeks ago : "Being a woman of compassion, I don't take threats" What a load of gibberish and the woman is being hailed in some sections of the media - most recently the Mail - as some sort of wit.

You must have little for doing, in that context I'm sure the Social Welfare cuts hit you hard.

The cuts during her tenure in Social Welfare were regretable, however I think Charlie McCreevy had more to do with their imposition than Coughlan.
Notwithstanding the closure of the Irish Sugar opperation (like the textile industry, a textbook case of a shrinking industry) and the constant decline of Irish fishereries (included in her Department only since 2007!) since 1973, she was an excellent minister for Agriculture and Food.
