The Sunday Times is a very silly paper

I normally buy The Sunday Times on Sundays. My main reason for doing so is the magazines and the foreign coverage which in my opinion beat anything else on offer. But their Irish news coverage and comment is decending from the ridiculous to the absurd. It appears that their sole guiding principle is a rabid anti-Fianna Fáil bias and a kow-towing to the Murdoch's friends.

After their all but pleading for a Fine Gael led government before the last election they have now decided to change tack and attempt to take down Fianna Fáil in oter ways, a running commentary akin to the Daily Mail on the tribunals, "cribbing and moaning" on the economy and their latest stunt, fighting a media campaign against Lisbon. They have stepped up from a simple declaration that No would not harm Ireland to using possibly the only Irish person(or perhaps the only person with an Irish name) in the British(which they conveniently omit) "Open Europe" think tank. This nice constructive name ofcourse hides an organisation whose credibility is about as sound as Libertas, and whose politics appear similar. They have allowed Brenda Power to take out her frustrations at not being able to to run a one woman campaign against the HSE but perhaps most disturbingly was their whitewash of disgraced Uxbek billionaire Alisher Uzmanov, their sanitised history of the man who was accused of fraud and racketeering among other things.

When will the competition improve so I won't have to pollute my eyes with that rubbish the pass off for a newspaper every Sunday.

I stopped buying Sunday newspapers years ago - there are far better ways of wasting your time

is your issue with the calibre of the journalism or with the fact that they have taken a stance against a party you believe in and support ?

personally i have always been a ST reader, then again i'm probably what some here would call a west brit / blue shirt

    But you're not bad really...

It's no harm having some arm of the media willing to kick the Government... ensures some balance

I don't buy it, but when I do pick it up, it has a brilliant sports supplement

Mr. Murdoch picked his horse a long time ago, and it wasn't FG! He did so after some blatant lick arsery by Bertie Ahern.

Mr. Ahern was, along with some Minsiters, a frequent guest "writer" in the NOTW.

I would imagine any subtle adversarial attidude to the Government by The Sunday Times would be a commercial decision to try to differentiate itself from the Sunday Indo and appeal to different constituencies, Ditto it's concerns on Lisbon.

I quite like it, mainly as you point out, for it's foreign coverage (Andrew Sullivans column), including UK coverage, where it still get's the vast bulk of it's output.

No, its the silliness of their writers.

Contast then to the IT which I also read.

The IT dislike FF, but they have their reasons, their own outlook which contrasts with FF leads them to those conclusions. The ST doesn't appear to have any guiding editorial objective other than FF hate. It's like the difference between Alf Garnett and Kevin Myers.

    Bertie's lick-arsery obviosly didn't do any good.

ditto an IT reader (though now mostly online edition) and to an extent i agree with you, personally i would love to see more of the IT journalists (esp McGee) along with Myers and a few others writting for the ST as well, and a few less (like Powers), that being said i don't think that the ST hates FF, i think it takes strong lines against the government and rightly so, of course it may seem like FF bashing but i'd like to think that both it and the IT would be as critical of any party in government when there are so many failings the part of same government. they should also praise and recognise achievements of same parties when they deliver...

and for what its worth if theres any party that the ST hates i believe it would be SF, they are almost always scathing of them at any oppertunity.....
