Well it certainly leaves them open to criticism . They should refuse all gifts and gratuities , it is vital that the gardai maintain their integrity .

It was disingenuous to compare gardai to say a shop owner who gets a bottle of whiskey from a rep or a binman getting a tip . I say this because it is unlikely that the shop owner or binman will ever be called upon to deal with a legal or criminal issue involving the gift giver whereas a gard may well be .

The point made by one caller refering to afterhours drinking and free breakfasts was quite pertinent since the gards have a lot of clout when it comes to the licensing of pubs .

Indeed , according to the show there seems to be a lot of that carry on and pretty harmless it is to you may say , but where do you draw the line ?
One business man claimed to have given hundreds of euros discount on tool hire Then someone from Donegal claimed that a hotel up there gives free use of the golf course + free meals for the gards and their families , now what happens if the hotelier is subject to criminal investigation for some reason ?.

Personally I feel sorry for the Garda these days. You say hello and they dont reply because they are used to getting abuse from the public, they have become more withdrawn and less friendly due to the changes in Irish society. They are always on the defensive. Everyone seems to having a go at them.

For example if some one is caught speeding, people say "F***ing Garda have they nothing better to do". They have a really hard job.

Personally I think it is grand that they get the odd from meal or perks here and there. They should be shown respect in society and no harm if they get a few perks, they deserve it for a very hard and thankless job.

You need to change the way u think. Banning something harmless incase someone might do something wrong is removing the traditional respect that the Garda used to get when they were on the beat, because the average punter thought the Garda were the good guys. If some one is caught breaking the law then prosecute them by all means.

The corruption in society regarding Garda, politicans etc is not only to do with these public service occuputions but more so it is through out the whole Irish society from top to bottom in all professions (sweeping statement :->) its just that these guys are at the front and public servants so we all think we can have a go at them.
'Tis well said again, And 'tis a kind of good deed to say well; And yet words are no deeds. - William Shakespeare, The Life of King Henry the Eighth (King Henry at III, ii)
