If this was genuinely about supporting Irish football O'Brien should have included an anonymity clause to keep his name quiet. This is about O'Brien the philantropist - the very public philantropist. You'd think with all his money he could at least have got Alex Ferguson.
Amazing that not even the most ardent socialists begrudge Trappatoni his two million a year, this despite the fact that he's quoted in one of this morning's papers as saying that one of the attractions of the job is that he'll be able to spend more time with his family. Not a squeak from Fintan O'Toole, Vincent Browne, CORI or any of the others who are always banging on about equality, relative poverty etc. The salary for the Office of Taoiseach (whether its Bertie or a successor from either party) is barely one-tenth of that. Yet, there is virtually unanimous agreement that its far too much. Of course, if Trappatoni wins Ireland the World Cup, he'll be worth it. But, he'll still collect his two million a year even if Ireland loses 16-0 to Cyprus.
What? And miss out on all the begrudgery?
