    Denis O'Brien pays for Trappatoni

He is paying half the salary of both Trappatoni and his assistant. Trappatoni is allegedly costing 2 million a year!

Indeed May I say thanks a million Denis.
By 2020, 12.75Lts of petrol will cost you just under €30, today it will cost you €16.42 exactly.

    Yep, thanks Dennis.
We'll pay a couple of billion in tax to the state, and you pay for the soccer manager.
    Sounds fair.

Always thought DOB was a rugby man, is he trying to show up Tony or does the Trap end up with contractural obligations to one of DOB's media outlets

What is he expecting for €1m from the FAI? He gave FF FG and the PD's €50K each and got a license to print money.
Presumably he'll drop by the country sometime and stay the night and watch the lads play and pay his tax?

He is a rugby man, he's a nice bloke. Had a few chats with him down at the rugby. But generally he probably has a broad interest in sport, most people don't confine themselves to an interest in only one sport!

Delaney says there are no obligations or strings attached.

Nice to see somebody putting some money back in.

    Thanks DOB

If this was genuinely about supporting Irish football O'Brien should have included an anonymity clause to keep his name quiet. This is about O'Brien the philantropist - the very public philantropist. You'd think with all his money he could at least have got Alex Ferguson.

Amazing that not even the most ardent socialists begrudge Trappatoni his two million a year, this despite the fact that he's quoted in one of this morning's papers as saying that one of the attractions of the job is that he'll be able to spend more time with his family. Not a squeak from Fintan O'Toole, Vincent Browne, CORI or any of the others who are always banging on about equality, relative poverty etc. The salary for the Office of Taoiseach (whether its Bertie or a successor from either party) is barely one-tenth of that. Yet, there is virtually unanimous agreement that its far too much. Of course, if Trappatoni wins Ireland the World Cup, he'll be worth it. But, he'll still collect his two million a year even if Ireland loses 16-0 to Cyprus.

What? And miss out on all the begrudgery?
