Never could understand how people paid this charge without a whimper but protested so strongly against being charged for a proper and necessary service like water.

RTE should survive on its own or fold.

Denis Naughten is just another gimp minister looking to make a name for himself before the government folds! He will never get re-elected so must do maximum damage this round to keep himself in people's minds.

The days of license fees should come to an end. They made sense when the only way to access TV broadcasts was through a TV set, and the only thing available through a TV set was broadcast television (of which a public broadcaster made up somewhere between 50% and 100% of channel offerings).

That just doesn't make sense now.

Far better to make a policy choice as to whether there is a public interest in having public service broadcasting. If there is, fund it through general taxation. If there isn't, don't.

I think there is definitely a case for public service broadcasting - but the license is an outdated and costly way of funding it.

My opinion on the matter is that there is no commercial reason for the licence fee to exist for the purposes of entertainment services.
It is not reasonable for a tax to be levied in lieu of services like home and away, celebrities go dancing and the kind to be delivered, considering the private for profit outfits on satellite (and at home) provide it already.
I thikn there is need for public service broadcast such as primetime, primetime investigates, news services, Irish services and some documentary services on the matters relating to Ireland.
That would be reasonable and means we don't have to pay the higher tax to be watching entertainment junk that can be consumed elsewhere

It's the cost of the license that really hurts. 80 for a 3 year firearm certificate yet we have to pay 160 PA for TV? Crazy, it's being driven by the greed heads in Donnybrook who want to keep getting the huge six figure salaries at our expense.

There won't be any protests on the streets about this, mainly because there are complexities and nuances to the issue that your average yahoo can't comprehend.

Nothing for Paul Murphy here, although he does very well out of RTE I suppose.

You mean like a Point of Sale unit? Even CCTV systems connect to the internet now to allow remote monitoring.

Should the TV licence fund Fair City, Operation Transformation, Striking Out, Winning Streak, The Meaning of Life,?

RTE is a joke. Could never understand how they can have two sources of income (license and advertising) yet NOT be able to be competitive... something about Wages being rediculously high and too many perks for the RTE "families" might have something to do about it....

It is about time that people refused to pay for this rubbish... if it is good, then it should be able to stand on it's own two feet..... (the amount of foreign rehashed material is incredible)

This tax is just a way of maintaining the BS that is RTE a channel I rarely if ever watch when in Ireland.. because it mostly has american films and english programming which I can get through SKY/Virgin......
