    Permanent Christian Radio Station Established

Life FM will begin broadcasting in Cork in mid March having been granted a five year license from the BCI. The station had previously broadcast on a temporary license in 2004.

In early 2004 Life FM went on air for 10 days, having obtained a temporary licence.

A further temporary licence was obtained in 2005 to allow the station to gauge public opinion. It transmitted for six weeks with mainly positive feedback.

Various Christian denominations in Cork have joined together to set up the station, which will go on air on March 16th....
This represents a new dynamic, for better or worse, in Irish radio broadcasting. The capital will soon too have its own dedicated Christian radio station with SpiritFM, well resourced, backed and financed, granted a license by the BCI last year and coming on stream within the next 12 months.

I listen to christian radio stations a lot in the US when i visit for the unintentional humour and occasional horror. Aside from biblical literalism, if this station is anything like those we can expect 30-second info slots containing 'facts' that disprove evolution; agony aunt programmes in which the bible and prayer are the answer to everything; manic defenses of holy Israel pitted against the biblical bad guys; and reminders to everyone to pray not only for your family and friends, but also - deep resonant voice - for America (or in this case Cork). It will be interesting to hear how involved these stations get on opining on political issues, though I doubt the listenership will be proportionately as large or significant as the American religious right.

I imagine it will be far more like UK/Ireland Christianity generally, like Cliff Richard on mogadon.

There are enough stations dedicated to the hedonistic pop culture so a bit of balance is fair enough. Let's give it a chance and see what it is like.

As said below, it will not be like that. Evangelical Christianity in the UK/Ireland and the USA are very different animals. Besides which these ventures are interdenominational. Last time Spirit FM broadcast all they had ads for was Youth 2000 which is a Catholic organisation.

The Dublin radio station Spirit FM will be an interesting venture in that it is so well resourced and has a very professional team behind it. It has already raised capital of over 1 million euro and intends having several fulltime presenters. As opposed to the Cork station which is largely voluntary.
