London has topped the most exhaustive comparison ever compiled of the world's great cities in a finding that sees Britain's capital outstrip global rivals as a centre of economic performance and cultural significance.

    According to The Independent.

saw this on Sky News this morning. Well it's always been one of the world's great cities, a Global city, rivalled only by Tokyo and New York in the modern world. That's not to say it's the best or most attractive city, but economically and culturally it is certainly Europe's capital. We may not like it, but it's true. Personally I;ve been there too many times to be ar5ed with it at this stage.
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

Dublin came 37th, ahead of Melbourne, Montreal, Frankfurt, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Zurich and Auckland. Behind Copenhagen, Athens, Brussels and Amsterdam et al.

Sorry I'm a nerd for these things. The methodology is very interesting. Click on the other links on the page above

Must agree. I think "familiarity breeds contempt" operates in this context.

Eh no, economically that would be Frankfurt, Culturally that would be Paris with Rome a close second.

Globally it is of course New York

That would apply only to Oirland.

Mainland Europeans do not look to London for any directions in culture and/or finance. Plenty of Oirish do but that don't make London the Capital of anything other than the UK.

Including Tony O'Reilly. Remember, 'The Independent' isn't.

An interesting survey which certainly puts us in our place. It scores each city under multiple headings and allocates 100 points to London as the No.1 city. This allows relative comparisons to be made with other cities. Dublin, in 37th place, only scores 31 points on that scale.

In joint 60th place are Beirut & Addis Ababa with a miserable 8 points each.

A question requiring an immediate answer is this: where are Cork, Limerick, Galway & Waterford?
Are we supposed to accept that these should not actually be regarded as "cities"?
Or is it that they scored less than 8 points each and didn’t make the published table?
