    Prime Time Debate

Betting on beer ads in the break tonight?

I was just thinking how drink is the gateway drug not hash/ecstasy...

Miami Police Chief: education, enforcement, treatment

The Englishman: legalise it or not - that's the question.

yes agreed on the gateway drug.

And watch the unanswered pleas again tonight from the frontline workers for treatment, respite, detox places. All this passes the political decision makers by - they hold the purse strings and they don't even hear the experts.

Tony Geoghagan and Chris Luke and their co-workers don't belong on the same planet at Pat Carey. I am sure he is a nice man.

The englishman (Danny Kushlick) is taking a global and historical view - 'devasted entire regions'. I like it. The disadvantages of prohibition (regional instabiltiy - e.g. Afghanistan) outweigh some toleration approach. Compares alcohol prohibition in the US. Lots of comparisons to grog.

Pat Carey and people in his position would do well to do their apprenticeship in that rehab clinic in Tallaght where Geoghagan works. He's probably a pioneer..

As Liverpool's second goal went in the lads in the commentary box were telling us how alcohol ads are illegal in France - so no beer ads in the stadium or on the shirts. I saw a headline yesterday in the paper about the GAA warning about the dangers of legal drugs. Great I thought a breakthrough for the likes of Dr Mick Loftus and Dr Joe Barry - Not a chance - they were on about mushrooms or something. Herbs don't pay the wages in Croker, beer does.

How about, rather than raiding the parties na Gardaí raid the pushers, especially the bosses?
Balls to evidence, never needed when fighting the Provies, they could be held and convicted on the word of a senior Garda, this is how we can tackle these bastards.
Keep them in prison for very long spells, without access to mobile phones, pc's and closed ob visits by families and away from ODC's.
The liberal folk out there may not appreciate this idea but how else do we reduce this problem and deal with criminals who laugh at our Gardaí and judicial process'.

yes Roy - but you know that will not happen. Start small. get low level intelligence. Arrest anyone with drugs - if they do not say who they bought it from they should be charged as a pusher, (and the law should be changed for this).

And on the other hand anyone can present themselves for treatment and be immune from prosecution of possession of undetected drugs offences before this.
