    As a general principle, wouldn't immigrants be expected to work harder than natives anywhere in the world ?

    The reasons being (again in general) :

    They are away from home and can commit to longer hours;

    They need to earn more to send more home or to fund the arrival of another family member (the Irish did this themselves in the States and elsewhere);

    They are paid less and/or have to accept the more menial jobs and must work longer hours to achieve the same income as a native;

    They want to "prove themselves" to their employers and to their adopted country by showing willing, not kicking up a fuss and making themselves indispensible.

    And so on and so forth. I'm not disputing any of the earlier thesis, but simply putting a few salient points.

    Sure Lenihan admitted they don't even know how many immigrants there are! If it is substantially higher than the Census, which it is, then labour force participation must actually be much lower than claimed here.

    Wrong as usual. If certain groups of immigrants didn't show up on the Census population figures, as Lenihan claimed, then they wouldn't show up in the workforce figures used in the article above. Both the population and workforce figures are taken from the same Census, remember?

    I take it from the content of your blog (four posts all against immigration in any form) that you'd be opposed to immigration, Hibernia Girl?
    Did the pretty Polish girl steal yer fella or something?

    Effing right I have! I'm nearly yet to meet an ugly one, frankly. Though I'd put the Balts ahead of them.

    Hmmm...

    I'm open to correction, but it would depend largely on how you interpret the term "unemployed".
