    Coast

Saw "Coast", on the BBC, last night. For just about the first time, I can say that a BBC progamme about Ireland was pretty good!

They called Ireland Ireland (well, it being about the West coastof ireland they really didn't have much choice, I guess!) - and they weren't patronising!

They covered the Burren, currach racing at galway, Skellig Michael monastery, said how irish was the first European language to be written down, how the Irish preserved learning in Dark Ages and reintroduced it to Europe, surfing in Dingle, the cliffs of Moher - and talked about St Brendan's possible voyage to America and its effect on Columbus's voyage!

Wow - for the BBC this was revolutionary stuff!

Only let down was when they talked of the "Famine", they said Queen Victoria and Britain did very little to help. They couldn't bring themselves to address the shiploads of food taken away! ......

Quite enjoyed it myself too. Pity they stopped at Baltimore, my family's from slightly east of there.

The male Scottish presenter didn't shirk the Famine imo. He showed us the mass graves and clearly said the British authorities did nothing to help.

It was a good programme and enjoyable, but basically it was about the coast and not history so come on give them a break!

Many of the History programmes produced by the BBC have over the years dealt with the famine and their responsibility.

Why would this country be even mentioned in this. They should concern themselves with their own coastline. By the ways, flaws in the programme were. The mile-long strand in Kerry humourously is called Inch by the Irish. It is actually "Inis" meaning island, you'd see why on a spring tide. They probably interviewed the dumbest amounst us for that piece of info. Valencia island, theres no Spanish connection with the name, its Béal Inse, mouth of the island. Anyway unless they're doing a programme on the North Atlantic Archipeligo, then stay away from here.

Aye and thankfully he didn't start into pointing out how many IRISH people harvested and transported all that food that was taken out. Neither did he talk about all the IRISH people who moved onto their dead neighbours holdings, tumbled their bothans and farmed it for themselves. Nor did he talk about the national denial that went on for decades afterwards followed by a simplistic 'it was the english wot done it' interpretation of the great hunger. Just like modern day famines in Africa it is the poorest of the poor who die, the next level up flee, and the ones that are left try to deny they had anything to do with it or that there was nothing they could do. Blame the Brits for everything, at least that way we dont have to look to closely at how our own people behaved at the time.
