    Auschwitz facebook page

Is this really necessary? Are we truly living in a world where the standards of learning have fallen so low to warrant facebook (ffs) for education?

What's wrong with History class and books etc.?

We're always trying for new ways of reaching people, and in today's world one of the most popular tools is the internet, and on the internet millions of people use Facebook

I've just checked the calendar. It's still October.

Not sure why this annoys me so much. Just seems that facebook and its ilk trivialise everything. Bite size sh1te.

Honestly, yes history class and books have failed to a great degree on matters such as this. Its not the fault of either teachers or publishers but more the question how do you get a generation who are growing up on Call of Duty to look at the issues raised which caused WW2 and the Holocaust in a continuing serious light. The war finished 64 years ago, those who were left to tell a tale have almost all died but the causes of the war remain largely unresolved. The war itself has become trivial to some, with it the causes. These methods of reaching younger generations with the true horror of our past in Europe may be distasteful to some, but no more than the detail and reality of that horror they seek to expose.

To me, any way the memories of WW2 as a whole can be kept alive helps at least in a small way from repeating them (naive I know). Sure we haven't learned to stop it in 64 years, we have already done it again in Europe in former Yugoslavia. Maybe we need more time and a different avenue.

What I would hope is that the millions of non-Jews who were killed in the Holocaust be remembered on similar sites and forums. To quote Simon Weissenthal

"For me was the Holocaust was not only a Jewish tragedy, but also a human tragedy."

Furthermore, if more 'popular' and innovative methods such as this were used to remember and educate people as to war crimes in Europe perhaps our politicians in Europe (our own included) would stop spitting on the graves of the millions murdered by Stalin and declare it a genocide as was the Holocaust. Because at the moment Stalin is considered just another politician rather than a genocidal maniac like Hitler. Its illegal to diminish the holocaust, but 2 million dead cossacks and countless millions of other innocents, who cares right, thats not illegal.

P.S: There are many allegations of almost Disneyland-itis surrounding the modern day Auschwitz and its commercialization as a tourist spot so I'm not surprised this group have done this. IMHO It doesn't take away from the potential educational benefits. Others opinions may vary.

From the I don't get it so why should anyone else school of thought.

There is nothing wrong with history class or books. God forbid that kids might learn something using the media they choose to consume. Why are you even using the Internet? What's wrong with standing on the street and shouting at people?

Next thing you know, people will be using Internet forums to discuss politics. Crazy!

Not really. Facebook by its nature is frivolous and fleeting. I don't like the idea of trivialising the horror of death camps for infotainment, unintentionally or otherwise.

I can also only imagine it being swamped by "Herman Goering (sp?) likes this" and what not. I like the idea, clearly, of spreading knowledge by as many means possible - this one just irks me - as I wrote in the earlier post, I'm not sure why.
