RTE salaries for the past two years have been released. Pat Kenny is number 1 with over 900,000, then Gerry Ryan, Marian Funicane at €570,000 for four hours a week (3 months off), Tubridy fourth and Joe Duffy, the man of the people is on €407,000, comes in fifth.

Also in the list - Derek Mooney, Sean O'Rourke, Miriam O'Callaghan, Eamon Dunphy and George Hamilton.

Scandalous amounts of money for the holidays they get and the work they do.

If they were on programs that could be sold abroad then perhaps it could be justified but not on the disposable local programming they produce.
Top Gear presenters at least have a product which is seen by 350M people worldwide.

The most incredible thing of all is that competition is no excuse at all in this case. If that fat, obnoxious fk Gerry Ryan was told he was getting paid €200k, what the hell could he do about it? There isn't another broadcaster who would pay him more. And the idea he could go to the UK and get the same is laughable. Ditto the rest of this lot. Bloody ridiculous.

Graham Norton didn't perform for BBC so he had to renegotiate his contract downward but here there appears to be no connect between viewing figures and salary..

I now know why the Irish people are not on the streets, as they would be in France.

The gatekeepers of the airwaves, who are "much-loved" by the same Irish people are on silly money.

Nothing personal, but think how much power the following people have in Irish society:

Marian Finuncane
Pat Kenny
Ryan Tubridy
Joe Duffy

They allow a little bit of steam to be blown off, but ultimately, their role is to damp down anger.

Paid for out of public money, they earn more than the Taoiseach. They are in the same league as top bankers.

Thus they promote a because I'm worth it culture.

Were we, en masse, to turn against such a culture, we would turn against them, too (or at least their pay and conditions).

No top banker or politician or media personality paid for out of public money is worth 10-30 the average industrial wage.

Geraldine Kennedy was allowing herself to be paid c. 400,000 whilst standards at the Irish Times were plummetting and its property and recruitment supplements raked in the cash and while the "economists" it regularly featured and who told us we were in a for a soft landing went practically unchallenged, but that's another story.

That's a good comparison; Richard Hammond in 2008 was on £225K per series - £15k per episode. Presumably Jeremy Clarkson was on more. But the series is an international moneyspinner.

Joe Duffy has 10% of the country listening to his show every day. Tubby has increased the ratings of everything he's touched. We'll see in a few months when the figures come out what effect Gerry Ryan's death has had on the RTE slot, which will be an interesting indicator as to listenership habits.
