    Looking for informations about Connaught/Mayo

    Hi folks,

I’m writing a report about Connaught and Mayo, so I need some informations I couldn’t got from wikipedia. I hope I may find anyone here in this forum to help me.

Connaught is short described in the slogan “to Connaught or hell”, because it’s a very poor region. What was the contibution of climate and soil to this situation? Why is it so difficult there for agriculture? How was the situation in ancient times?

I know, the most used agriculture fruit was the potatoe. And anything else? How is the economy in Connaught and Mayo today? How do the people earn their living now? Is tourism a suitable replacement for agriculture in Mayo?

    Greetings

A great part of it is upland moorland with lots of rainfall carried by the prevailing south west winds off the Atlantic.

In short a lot of bog there.

The saying "to Hell or to Connaught" came about from the time of Cromwell and the Adventurers who helped fund the settlement of Ireland by the English in the 17th century as punishment for the 1642 rising and as a method of payment to Cromwell's Ironsides for their services during the English Civil war. As a result the Native Irish were forced West of the Shannon and into Connaught where it was said of the land “to have not wood enough to hang a man, water enough to drown him, nor earth enough to bury him.”

Yeah, I know thats quick and dirty , I'm sure that somebody will be along shortly to correct me this is the internets after all

Local Papers in Mayo: The Connaught Telegraph, The Mayo News, The Western People. All are online, and The Connaught Telegraph may be particularly helpful to you, as it dates back to 1827 (I think). They released a history of the paper in 1997 which details the history of the area, which could be useful to you.

Do a search for Connacht, there will probably be more information available under the correct name for the province.

I'm a big fan of this legend of Irish folklore, Granuaille, The Pirate Queen.

    She was a Connaght lass.

Where is this "good land" you speak of?
