Robinson is simply wrong on this, papers should be donated free of charge to the state that she has done so well out of.

And she's continuing to do well out of it.

I don't know what the present amounts are but this is from a 2012 press-report -

Former president Mary Robinson received a combined presidential and Oireachtas pension of €174,883 and returned €15,499 of it ...

And as pointed out by the IT article , many of the books were just presented to her , she has also listed the master file of her presidential engagements as part of her own property for valuation.

As Ferriter points out that surely this is the property of the state and not hers anyway. She is has even listed the candle from the window as part of the overall valuation so as she get a personal tax credit of up to 2 million Euro.

All her predecessors donated their archives free of charge to the state without seeking any tax credits , and many of them were not the 120,000 pension she is currently on as well.

Then she has the gall to describe it as a 'give back' to the people of Ireland.

Until I read the OP I had no idea what Robinson's pension from the state amounted to. €120,000 is extraordinarily generous for any past President, even more so for one whose term was neither inspiring nor memorable other than for her indecent haste to vacate the office for what seemed like a more suitable post for a publicity junkie.

It's traditional practise for past Presidents to donate their papers to the state and I see no reason why Robinson's should be treated any differently and given any monetary value whatsoever, particularly as she thought so little of the post in the first place.

It's just one more miserable example of how ego can often trump decency.

Leave her alone. She represents Mna Na hEireann and is a friend of the Unionists. She has given great inspiration to Miriam O Callaghan (who has her knockers etc.)
She also wanted to abolish the Special Criminal Court in the early 1970s (Imagine how that would have worked out)

she should follow the practice of her predecessors and donate her papers to the National Library, the National Archives or one of the national universities, without any need for tax credits or valuations by auctioneers and with no excessively expensive, publicly funded vanity centre.
    Ferriter is dead on here.

These are educational as well as state resources. A university is a good place for them, IMO.. so Ireland's future archivists can learn about keeping archives in good order, right on campus.

She was ahead of the curve by rattling on about The Diasporas, even if Albert Reynolds thought her waffle was a waste of time
