100 Reasons to vote Yes to Lisbon

Interesting reasons for voting Yes to a dull treaty - The Irish Times - Tue, Aug 25, 2009

The author of the book "100 Reasons to vote Yes to Lisbon" was just on the Last Word on Today FM.

Some of the reasons include :

MONEY: The European Central Bank is our own personal ATM and it’s the only bank I know of that still keeps spewing out cash long after “insufficient funds” has flashed up on the screen. Whisper it: this is funded by German taxpayers and most of the Sabines, Wolfgangs and Horsts out there don’t know the extent to which their money is bankrolling Ireland, so we need to preserve the tiniest soupcon of goodwill from these blithely ignorant everyday Germans with a modicum of co-operation on our part.

SEX: Carla Bruni wants you to vote Yes to Lisbon. She’s never been denied anything before and we’re kind of scared by her voracious appetites. Besides if she turned her back on us, we’d miss the golden sunshine of her smile, the sharp glint of her incisors, the steely gaze, those iron thighs – it’s nothing to do with what her mini-Gaulle lover wants, it’s all down to her wish to preserve her grand place at the heart of Europe and France, toppling Josephine in the minds of political love historians. Alas, no protocol prevents Carla from annexing the rest of Europe with her charm.

I listened to the author this afternoon on news talk, it came across as a choreographed softening up salvo, attempting to inject a lighthearted and humorous spin to the yes side. Personally I wont be bought off by the worship of celebrities such as Carl Bruni.

As to the other point regarding the ECB, firstly it is supposed to be an independent apolitical institution which enables it in theory to operate regardless of populist political influence from the EC or member states. In all probability the only reason the ECB is propping us up is that the euro zone would be called into question should Ireland seek remedy (albeit poisonous) from the IMF. I would argue also that if we still had our own currency we would not be in the economic morass we now find ourselves in. If we had had the punt we could have reduced the pressure to cut back on public expenditure by a currency devaluation. Also we could have regulated the property market by setting appropriate interest rates.

For the love of Harry Potter, will all of ye pipe down - it's just a tongue in cheek article, that's all. We've already had threads on how charities and trips to the cinema are subliminally seducing us to vote yes and now this! Talk about paranoia

it's not in the Political humor forum though is it, ask the mods to shift if you feel so strongly and then we can all have a good laugh at it.

it certainly does sound like a softening up alright.

although , to be fair to the author , he did state that the book has received zero funding from any in the Yes campaign.
