UK Defence minister backs calls for EU army

John Hutton has backed the creation of an EU army. For the first time the UK are now on board. His comments are absolutely explicit.
"Britain's role in the world is to be part of those alliances - that's the best way to project power, strength and conviction around the world," he continued. "People who don't understand that don't understand the nature of the modern world."
for some time the prospects of an EU army have been downplayed by assurances like "the british would never agree to it". The timing of his comments indicate what would have awaited us if we voted yes last june and what awaits us under the next presidency of a pro-militarisation country.

Excellent news! Britains semi-detached attitude to the EU and it's lingering notions of grandeur viv a vis defence have been a waste of time and money for all concerned.

This looks like a 1,500 jobs for Ireland announcement.
Good news, hope it goes ahead.

One minister flying a kite as a result of a defence spending review does not a change in foreign and defence policies make. Let alone from a Labour minister looking at his last year in office.

That will come in at number 7.

    The top six currently are:

    1. He never said it

    2. He never said it in English and that is a dodgy translation.

    3. OK with the translation then but it is out of context.

    4. All right that was the context but he is an old fool and should not be taken seriously.

    5. He may be a member of the European Council but what he does in his spare time is his business.

    6. He might have offered her a seat in the European Parliament but didn't his wife put a stop to that so it's nothing to do with the EU.

The UK are already under Germany's control in the anti-piracy mission off Somalia. So will that old phrase be rewritten as "The sun will never set on the Holy Roman Empire"? I suppose that it's still lost on people that the EU is a concerted effort to re-make the continent in Germany's image, and a certain vision of Germany too.
