Labour: we shall fight in the streets...

Labour will conduct a house-to-house 'ground war' to try to secure a 'Yes' vote in the upcoming referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon:

THE LABOUR Party will conduct its Lisbon Treaty referendum campaign like a “ground war” rather than the “air war” last year’s campaign turned into, leader Eamon Gilmore has said.

Outlining the party’s approach to the October 2nd poll and launching its online campaign at www.labourforeurope.ie Mr Gilmore said it would treat the referendum like a traditional election campaign and canvass intensely door-to-door.

Speaking at a press conference in Dublin, he said: “we will campaign on the basis that every individual vote will count”.
The FutureTaoiseach like sub-Churchillian rhetoric aside, it's good to see at least one of the political parties adopt this vital strategy.

Hopefully FF and FG follow suit sooner rather than later.

    I can see it now...

Reasonably upmarket housing estate in Lucan.

    *knock knock*

Householder: [to self]Who the hell is that? *knock knock* ah I'll miss Corrie [goes to door] Hello
Labour party head: Hi, we're from the Labour party, we'd like you to vote yes to Europe. We're proud to be Irish!
HH: Er... ok, why should I? That Ganley fell said last year that it was bad for us.
LPH: Em... because we have to say Yes to Europe.
    HH: why?
LPH: because we'll have no economy and no jobs if we don't and Europe has been good to us.
HH: What's that got to do with the Treaty. Look, I have a copy here, I read it last time. I saw nothing about that in there. And Europe hasn't exactly been great to farmers or fishermen, has it?
LPH: But we've to be proud to be part of Europe!
HH: I am, but what's that got to do with the treaty?
LPH: Did you know that Ganley fella lied, and he's part of the CIA.
HH: No he's not. Now tell me about the treaty.
LPH: Eah, we've got to go. Nice talking to you. Vote yes to lisbon! [scarpers]

Whatever about fishermen, farmers have been cosseted since the introduction of CAP. Europe has been better for farmers than any other group on the continent.

Labour used the last referendum as an opportunity to put up posters of its local election candidates. It looks like they will be using this one as a dry run for the general election.

Labour are such a joke. Should they not be fighting 'on the streets' for the working people of Ireland in these tough times, nah, we'll 'fight' for the ******************************g lisbon treaty which the people already rejected

Gilmore at door: You can trust me, I'm a man of integrity.

    HH: Really?

Gilmore: Absolutely, I mean what I say, and say what I mean.

HH: How come then you said last year the day after the June 2008 referendum :
"I think the Lisbon Treaty is dead. The Lisbon Treaty to be ratified requires 27 Member States to ratify it. The Irish people have now decided in a Referendum that they do not wish to have it ratified therefore Ireland cannot ratify the Lisbon Treaty and therefore the Lisbon Treaty falls" - RTE SixOne News, 13/6/08

“I don't think there's any question of this Treaty being put a second time to the people” -

“People have made a decision. The Lisbon Treaty cannot now be ratified. And I think that the decision that has been made by the Irish people has got to be respected by everybody. Got to be respected by the Taoiseach, by the Government, by the other Member States, by the political leadership in Brussels” -

Gilmore: Yes, well I just changed my mind that's all.
I've got principles, but I can change them it you don't like them.

HH: You pal, are a very STICKY customer.
You're an effing disgrace - you've abandoned the ordinary worker who will be hit by the Charter of Retractable Rights in the Lisbon Treaty - the charter is of course the foundation of the Laval jugdements etc which will undermine workers rights in Ireland and attack labour conditions.

Gilmore: Yes well. You gotta look after number one.

HH: Traitor, hypocrite! Get lost, damn Sticky. Oh, and keep of the prawn sandwiches.
