Ganley Loan to Libertas "a bona fide loan" - SIPO

Meanwhile, it said the €200,000 loan by businessman Declan Ganley would “seem to indicate that it is a bona fide loan”. Libertas, it said, provided a copy of the loan agreement and confirmed it did not receive any other loans.

    Ganley's Libertas loan 'bona fide'

Declan Ganley's €200,000 loan to his Libertas organisation during the first Lisbon Treaty referendum was above board, the State ethics watchdog confirmed yesterday.

A bona fide loan is not regarded as a donation to a political organisation. The Standards In Public Office Commission got details of the loan from Mr Ganley's solicitors in March.

Ganley's €200K loan seems petty compared to what's going on now with the bailouts.

    Even more absurd is this:

The Lisbon referendum last year highlighted “significant weaknesses” in the laws governing the activities of third-party organisations in such campaigns. Groups that spend €5,000 on a campaign should be “required to show how their campaign” was funded, while limits on the type and amount of donations would apply. The commission welcomed the Government’s intention to stiffen rules governing the involvement of such organisations in referendums.
SIPO should be dismantled after this farcical statement while they mention nothing about the millions in Yes campaign funding.

well THAT came in under the radar.

i havent heard a thing on the radio about this, or is it only news when it helps the yes side?

ganley was demonsied from a height on this and SIPO dragged its heals releasing info in the most damaging way it could before having to fess up there was nothing in it to begin with.

once again an irish body debases itself for its "mastas" in gov. the difference between ganleys treatment and aherns is marked, to put it mildly.

at this rate its a wonder anyone believes the state on a contentious issue.

thats irelevant at this point.Sipo agreed it was a valid loan after seeing a loan agreement, the terms of that agreement may not have required the loan to be paid back yet.

The best thing Decco could do in the lead up to the Lisbon Farcerendum is to launch libel actions against certain people on the Yes for smearing him.

A loan is not a loan unless arrangements are made to repay it and actual repayments have been made otherwise it is a gift/donation, this supposed "Loan Agreement" would appear to be reminiscent of Bertie's debts of honour not to be repaid unless exposed.
