Sure it's only illegal if a court says so. And they are practically off on hols till October.

If there is anything false or deliberately misleading on these, I want to know what legal remedy we have against Micheál Martin in this case?

Surely, we must have some way to tackle this sort of behaviour? If not, why not?

I am of the opinion that to send out any information that will lead to people voting in a certain way is a massive crime and at the most basic level, treachery to the people of Ireland. But will anything come of it?

    This is most disturbing indeed.
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.

The poor old Department of Foreign Affairs - stuck between their duty to explain foreign affairs to the public, and the automatic suspicion and resentment of a certain section of that same public.

Whatever happened to FT's proposed legal case against the DFA?

Eh, you do realise that's just phrasing on a leaflet and not the legal definition right!?

It doesn't matter, at least not to me, whether the information is accurate and truthful; if it is, that's a nice surprise. What really matters is that public money is being spent on one side of the argument.

The government of the day must be free to have its own point of view, and for this to be reflected in the outlook and output of the Department of Foreign Affairs. But a line is crossed when, with a referendum coming down the tracks, voters are fed one-sided material paid for by public funds.

The f--kers must think we're so paralysed by the state of the economy that they can roll back all that has been achieved in keeping the government honest. The Constitution contains the fundamental rules of the game, and if we allow the government to use our own money to campaign on how to change that document, we will be sailing in even murkier and more dangerous waters than we are already.

Also, just to get it off my chest for the nth time, how can the Greens live with this? For their next surprise, will they be giving the thumbs-up to nuclear power?

Perhaps that section of the public remembers the role of Iveagh House in throwing open our labour market and in issuing that reckless and irresponsible invitation to 75 million East Europeans.
