Daniel Hannan: principled opposition to centralised power

    His blog,

Ireland to vote on identical text

    Latest post,

The Conservatives and the EPP, the apology you won't be hearing from the press,

"In recent years, in common with other newspapers, we may have given the impression that, if the Conservatives left the European People's Party, they would end up sitting with far Right, homophobic and possibly anti-Semitic parties. In repeated headlines, we linked them to Italian neo-fascists, Third Reich nostalgics and other assorted crackpots.

Now that they have unveiled their allies, we have to admit that they have brought together a coalition of moderate Centre-Right parties - in many cases parties of government - and that many of the MEPs who have joined them are former ministers. It turns out that the Italian neo-fascists have in fact joined the EPP. Perhaps we should re-examine our automatic assumption that extremism and pro-Europeanism are incompatible."In recent years, in common with other newspapers, we may have given the impression that, if the Conservatives left the European People's Party, they would end up sitting with far Right, homophobic and possibly anti-Semitic parties. Hannan on Hannity! About sums him up.

Another rightwing " friend of Ireland "

    You'd think we'd learn.

Considering that Fox News has viewing ratings that beat ABC/CBS and NBC ( and CNN MSNBC combined ) I can hardly blame Hannan for wanting to express his view from the most powerful platform. Left-wing printed news is dying and left-wing news stations are seeing huge losses in audience share.

Did you really expect Hannan to be interviewed by the Huffington Post?

Sir Richard Dawkins has also appreared on Fox news several times - debating with O'Reilly on religion, philosophy etc. Does that make Dawkins a "right-wing extremist" - or someone who wants to reach the largest audience with his opinions?

Dawkins has no political-economical axe to grind. Not a good analogy at all.

Dawkins had a religious/philisophical axe to grind - along with a book to sell - so his appearance on market-dominating Fox News is actually a pretty sound analogy.

Both Hannan and Dawkins want to reach the largest audience.

I don't disagree with that. But my point is that Hannity is a clown. And Hannan is
not a person we should be emulating, referencing or giving kudos to in any way shape or form.

Fair play to them. The cosy-consensus in the European Parliament has undermined the democratic-credentials of that institution, notably with the stitch-up between the EPP and PES over the Presidency of the EP, and the suppression of the Galvin report on EP corruption.
