Has the no to Lisbon campaign in Ireland been terminally damaged?

With Libertas imploding across Europe and Mary Lou and Kathy Sinnott losing their seats, admittedly by tight margins, has the No to Lisbon camp been damaged beyond repair?

Joe Higgins is admittedly elected and is anti Lisbon but that was only part of his campaign.. and I believe he got votes from Dubliners who were more anti FF than anti Lisbon.

His 10 point manifesto was a standard leftist agenda focussing on national issues in the main.

So with only Joe (who will run a mile from the Coir / PLC crowd) How can they recover between now and October?

Admittedly without a change of government the Yes campaign will hardly be inspiring either.

It's definitely been dealt a severe blow tonight.

The Yes campaign needs to start next week.

Yes campaigners need to campaign and canvass with the same intensity as No campaigners did last year.

Canvassing is what wins electoral contests in Ireland, whether they be elections or referendums.

Canvass voters, explain the Treaty, win the referendum.

Whether or not the No campaign has been damaged, one thing is certain and that is that the nature of the next anti-Lisbon campaign will be fundamentally different to the last. It will now be led by progressive leftists and the key issue will be the neo-liberal agenda of the EU.

Play the ball, not the man.

Lisbon is about the issues involved, whatever they are, not those campaigning for it or against it.

I remember hearing plenty of times that the representatives of the No side had no mandate from the people. I don't know why it's suddenly any different.

Its an inexplicable Document - so how can anyone explain it?

    and remember:

We cannot now change the Treaty

They put themselves up before the electorate and the electorate said no thank you.

Just being facetious, but that's the way the media, the Indo and the Sindo in particular, are going to portray it, assuming that Joe Higgins/SF lead the No campaign.

No campaigners had better hope that the left leads the campaign.

If the public sees COIR and assorted nutters on their TV screens* as the leaders of the No campaign, it'll pass by 99% to 1%!

*In the interests of fairness and balance in broadcasting, they should of course be given lots of airtime by RTÉ and the rest of the media...

Joe Higgins won a seat in Dublin.

The anti Lisbon vote in the South was very high and Ganley put on a respectable performance in the NW.

But there is no doubt that the next Campaign will be different from the last and a lot more visceral...
