French Agriculture Minister Michel Barnier last night warned Irish farmers that failure to support the Lisbon Treaty next time around could have severe ramifications for farming and rural communities, writes Aideen Sheehan...
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mr Barnier's words will be seen as a rebuke to the IFA for their refusal to give their support to the 'Yes' campaign in the Lisbon Treaty referendum until the last minute in a bid to gain political leverage in the World Trade Organisation talks.

It's about time that the farmers realised which side their bread is buttered

You mean that 40% of the EU's budget is being spent on butter?

It didn't take much to manouvre the farmers the last time.

The IFA initially tried to recommend a 'No' vote in order to twist the hand of government. They soon came round to a 'Yes' though and didn't take much convincing.

The Irish people will not be threatened or intimidated into voting for this flawed treaty.

This is an extremely vague threat. Which ramifications are these? Because french farmers get the same deal as irish farmers. Are the french going to punish their own?

We have to remember that France has a massive agricultural complex compared to us and as such they receive a lot in CAP funds.

CAP, in 2006, had a Budget of 49.8 billion and that serves 5% of the EU's population.

Tell me, who is it that gets the most?

Jeez, would you No people ever stop being so f*cking precious? Ye have spent the last year claiming the right to interfere in other countries' ratification processes, yet as soon as someone says boo to you (and a very vague, generalised boo at that), the howling and wailing starts again.

Give it a rest, for crying out loud.
