    note that reference to "consequences".
When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators

Well, things often do have consequences. Causal universe, all that.

He is right - the treaty would become a battlefield in the European parliament elections and that's the way it should be in the absence of referenda in the other member states. This is Europe's opportunity to cast a verdict on the despised and rejected Lisbon treaty, especially for the disenfranchised French and Dutch electorates whose govts have violated their sovereignty by defying their no votes with a treaty that is near identical in substance.

The "must" tone from the Eurocrats underlines the increasingly dictatorial and undemocratic tendencies of the Brussels elites. Senor de Vigo, we have seen off worse than you in our history and will not be bullied.

    FT:
Sinn Fein is the only political party in Ireland that opposed Lisbon. Do you really think that the European political equivalents of Sinn Fein is going to sweep the Euro elections across Europe in 2009?

This is an interesting quote all the same

Inigo De Vigo, a Spanish MEP, said they cannot wait that long. “The Lisbon treaty will become a battlefield in the parliament elections and the issues that are really important for the citizens such as the economy, climate change and energy security will be neglected.”

They are terrified that their own citizens should even debate the lisbon treaty in the context of an election. That sentence pretty much sums up what is wrong with the EU.

Can't have the citizenry interfering with the political seating arrangements.
