Democracy does exist. The problem is that the people dont give a dam that politicians dont give a dam what we think. Accept Fine Gael.

The only organisation to actively get peoples opinions on Lisbon and debate the pros and cons. They just did it badly.

It is understandable that the parliament wants the treaty ratified. Its powers increase enormously, its role in confirming the commission will be bigger and the seat breakdown between countries will be different. If Nice is used, they will have far less power and Spain in particular will lose out heavily in terms of MEP numbers.

But there is no chance of a referendum before October next year. That delay will cause serious legal and constitutional troubles for the commission as its term ends in October and it may not be possible under the old rules to appoint a new one. The Barroso commission may continue as an acting commission, but with little legal power. Any new commission under Nice, if one can be appointed, has to have less than 27 members. Contrary to the Libertas spin it is legally impossible to appoint a full 27 commission ever again under Nice. Nice requires an automatic reduction from the commission formed next after the EU hits 27 members. That happened when Romania joined. Therefore it is obligatory that a smaller commission be formed from the next commission. There is no legal way around it.

The vast majority of Irish people want US troops and aircraft out of Shannon. The gvt don't give a damn. The vast majority want Harney gone as health minister, the gvt don't care. The people voted No to Lisbon, the gvt doesn't accept it.

If we must vote again on Lisbon then perhaps we should also vote again on the general election. They say we didn't understand the treaty, maybe some didn't but how many were unaware before the general election that FF didn't understand how to balance a budget? Surely that fact should have been made clear to the people.

Strictly speaking, we have a representative democracy - we vote our politicians in to make decisions on our behalf, and if they do something we don't want we can always vote them out subsequently.

The people voted No to Lisbon, the gvt doesn't accept it.
The govt HAS accepted the Lisbon verdict - it has not sought to ratify the Lisbon Treaty, which the referendum would give it the authority to do, if passed.

Seems accurate enough to me. Both MEPs are quoted as saying that they want us to have a second referendum before the Euro elections in June, as after will be too late in their opinion.

There would be a hell of a lot of Yes people who would vote No to a L2 on principle.

I'm sure Brian has explained that to his colleagues.
