"They take away our freedom in the name of liberty"
The best comment in that article was "Now the EU is again in the Irish stew." To stick to culinary expressions, Uffe Ellemann-Jensen seems to want to have his cake and Ireland's too.
And some people said the Yes side were exaggerating the consequences of a no vote![]()

I agree with this.
Perhaps there could be some temporary fudge: a suspension of membership for 5 years, with our MEPs becoming observer members.
The nightmare is that Ireland needs to hold a referendum to leave. I can imagine a situation where a referendum to leave is held, and rejected. Followed by a new referendum on Lisbon, which is also rejected. We would be in limbo - trapped by that wonderful constitution, which, I am reminded on this site, people died for.
"Who will bailout the IMF after FF is finished with them?"
I like this line, it says a lot about his ethics and his vision of a democratic EU
"unfortunate Irish tradition for referendums"
I mean, how dare the people have their say!![]()
Food tastes better when you put it all together! It's the one best mayonnaise!
How terrible it is for people to have a say(!)The unfortunate Irish tradition for referendums should have been addressed after that dismaying experience [Nice I] .
Kicking Ireland out of the EU is clearly a nonsense. Irish voters share many of the same concerns as the ordinary European citizen. It is the European ruling class that needs to take a hard look at itself..
"I put down the welter of corruption in Irish politics to Burke's escape from retribution after that exposure in 1974. It gave everybody in the game a licence to steal."

What a douche.
I voted yes, was disappointed with the result but am more disappointed to see a comment like this
"The unfortunate Irish tradition for referendums should have been addressed after that dismaying experience."
from someone like that.
Whether we like the result or not, asking the people their opinion and getting a majority vote is a good thing!
This kind of stuff makes it seem likely that we'll be told to reconsider with a continental made gun pointed directly at our head.![]()

He is dead right. Where Denmark has a definite legal and constitutional procedure for when and how to hold a referendum on EU matters, Ireland only has a tradition based on a single 20 year old judgement, which has never been clarified.Originally Posted by PaintingMedium
I think it is time to hold a referendum on the Crotty judgement.

This guilt trip on enlargement too. Why not just admit the new members?
