Tell you what LT, wht not just take away our right to vote all together. I am sure Europe always has our best intrests at heart. And if the electorate cannot be trusted to decide what is best for themselves then we should just decide for them.
You cant jusst ignore the vote because you dont like it.

Ooops, I feel I have mixed you up with someone (Trampas?).

Bleá Cliath - uh? What's wrong with that?
    Baile Átha Cliath
And how does this prove "Bleá Cliath" is wrong? Ever heard of "alternative spellings"?

Aren't the agreements that make it up based on the EU? I find it hard to believe that it is covered by a completely separate treaty.

What is bull************************ is the fact that you are trying to devalue the irish vote. Like i said, we got the commisson reports. We listened to the debates. The Irish people made an informed decision. Do you think Cownes vote or McCreevy's vote should be ignored also? They didnt read the treaty that they were so ardently pushing.

Let us not decend into melodrama. First of all, whatever your affiliation - you should agree there are limitations of direct democracy, otherwise representational democracy would not have evolved. Referenda are fun and appropriate, but only on the questions people fully comprehend. It is fair to make a referendum on joining NATO as it is clear-cut choice and consequences even not too bright resident can understand. Lisabon treaty is an inherently complicated document stiched as a grand compromise between 27 nations (Irish representatives including) which is, frankly speaking, accessible only to lawyers. So it is rather NAIVE to subject such document to popular vote. Smacks of populism to me. Are you really implying an average Irish voter was fully equiped to judge on merits of Lisabon treaty? Was it reasonable to expect an informed choice? Answer those questions first, and THEN we can debate if "Irish have spoken". I mean sure they have spoken, but I am deadly certain they have spoken on many things bar Lisabon treaty herself.

My blood is really starting to boil the more i read about the EU trying to pass off the Irish vote as "incorrect". The Irish have spoken and we will be heard. They are the rules. Go back and write a new treaty. At the very least, give the rest of Europe a vote & ask the people what they think of Lisbon? Ask Holland, ask France, ask Denmark, I think you will find we are not alone!!!
Irish have demonstrated an amazing propensity not to read what they are voting for as indicated by exit-poll answers. Nothing to be proud about, rather a reason for shame...

This is rich.. Before the treaty the Yes camp was shooting down any poll in which it was suggested the No camp were were leading... now all of a sudden they are interested in surveys. Ha!

Methinks LTGuy just wants to safeguard his country's largesse from Brussels by keeping them sweet like we used to do.

Let's start with you, FT. You have plainly expressed the reasons you voted No. Primarily, you are pissed off by Gypsy beggars. Fair enough, I feel empathy for your plight. But can you confirm that Lisabon treaty addresses Gypsy-beggar-in-your-backyard anyhow? Can you truly state by voting NO you tried to address this concern? Or you just voted NO to embarrass Cowen for not doing anything about things that really concern you, .i. Gypsy beggars. I am sure if you analyze EVERY no-voter you come to the same conclusion. Barely anyone cared about Lisabon treaty as such, people were reacting on sloppy job of Irish government and vented their frustration in the referendum. Yet, don't you think you have to express your dismay at sleazy Irish politics in LOCAL and NATIONAL election, not in European referenda which are only tangentially responsible for your problems?

I can read through the Irish constitution and understand it.
The basic laws of how we our governed should be understood by the general public. We shouldn't have to rely on lawyers to interpret the oracles messages.

    We won, you lost.
