26 countries vs 26 counties! Sound familiar.

    Re: Civil War

Frankly I think civil war was (in the far future) avoided by the Irish NO vote.
Do you have any idea what large segments of the population (not only in Ireland but in spain, england, etc) would do if they felt like they had been 'duped' into losing sovereignty? What about the Germans and French when they found out that instead of being in control of the EU they would be sidestepped by a functionary elite?

This way is better. If some European countries want to try again to form a superstate.. they can try, but hopefully next time they will be clear in what they are trying to attempt. There is no need to rush, nothing has been lost by this vote.

If the populations of EU members thought that joining an Economic trade pack like the European community deserved referendums in the various countries.. dont you think that 1) that having referendums on the loss of sovereingty is required even more? 2) being just a state (in the sense of a USA state) of a New nation called the EU is not what they signed up for? 3) that even if some members wanted that, not necessarily all member of the European community would like to?

(PS. besides if France and Germany, etc want to go ahead.. it is really simple: first quit the current treaty, just like Greenland did, simply by stating 'we cancel the treaty by such and such date' and then on that date, sign the European constitution and from their new nation, and then if they wish, apply for membership in the current EU for that nation, it could not be simpler... so what are they complaining about?)

The Americans foresaw a lack of unanimity being a stumbling block. Constitutional amendments needs the support of 75% of the states to come into force. And the states that failed to ratify the consitution itself were threatened with being treated as foreign countries. I know the US is a federal system but over two centuries ago they had significantly more cop-on in drafting broad legal documents that Europe does today.

being just a tad dramatic there arn't we ? if any country that votes for such a thing and it comes to be (be it called The Constitution, The Lisbon Treaty, or what ever is to follow) is that unhappy they can elect a government that has a policy of either re-negoiating or at the extreme leaving the EU, something that is included in the current proposed treaty (the mechanisms there of any way)

Does Mary Lou sending Cowen to Brussels on the imposible mission to get a better deal remind anyone of when De Valera sent Collins to London to do the same? That latter episode did result in civil war...
