    Disruption of official announcement

I watched the announcement from Dublin Castle on Sky and couldn't help but feel angry at the people who completely disrupted the announcement and showed the height of disrespect to the man - clearly rather nervous - who was trying to announce the result in front of the national and international press. Obviously if you're on the winning side a bit of cheering and hooping is fine, but this was prolonged, and in addition a few people had also been lifted onto peoples shoulders as if they'd been elected to something. They could have waited another 30 seconds to let the man finish speaking, and then by all means pop the corks.

I should say that I voted yet and I would find it equally unacceptable if anyone on the yes side had done the same thing had the result gone the other way.

It's not everyday you get to celebrate true national freedom.
We've listened long and hard to "officials" and now it's the people's turn to speak
and celebrate. What a great day to be Irish!

It would be polite to let the guy read out the result at least.

Eh the same laws are imposed on us from Brussels today as were yesterday. And you always always always respect the political process, which includes allowing the results to be read out and announced formally to the nation. Any disruption reveals a strain of knackerism and civic disrespect. Much like the heckling of Herr McD of Ranelagh, it was once again a bunch of twits making twits of themselves
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

I wouldn't care about it being on TV, that's irrelevant. I just felt sorry for the guy trying to read the result and the people at home who didn't understand the Irish version and were waiting for the English version.

You're quite right. I also thought the attitudes towards the minister having an interview was entirely inappropriate.

I have to say that elections in North America are very dull in comparison. Unlike Ireland/UK there's no count centre coverage and they announce results box by box rather than by constituency so results are "declared" with 1% counted, five minutes after the poll closed and crap like that. Without an official declaration they take cameras to "victory parties" (or defeat parties) at disparate locations so you never get to see the candidates react as a group to a result. I don't think anyone who saw something like the e-poll that saw Nora Owen defeated will forget her expression as she stood with the other candidates - in North America they're hiding in back rooms waiting for CNN to tell them the outcome.

It is fitting to read the result in Irish first ,this is Ireland ,but the disruption was disgraceful,as was the shouting down of Brian Lenihan earlier, always take triumph or defeat gracefully ,i speak as a "no" voter.

After pathetic scenes like this I think its time we looked at the north American model!
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.
